The announcement was made this afternoon by the mayor's office.

No End in Sight for "Turkey Bowl"

(La Porte, IN) - There’s a long tradition of flag football on Thanksgiving in La Porte

What’s basically a pick-up game involving anyone who wants to show up and play is held annually in a field behind the old Ruth Sabin Home, a mansion in the 1600 block of Michigan Ave.

According to historians, the late Don Tonsoni, who was a teacher at La Porte High School, began the tradition and continued on with it until his death in 2023.

He lived next to the residence and came up with the idea the day before Thanksgiving about a half century ago.

“They play rain or shine every year.  They’ve never missed a year,” said La Porte resident Mike Kellems, who as out there Thursday checking out the action.

Kellems said the players in what’s dubbed the “Turkey Bowl” range from college students home for the holiday to senior citizens.

Mechanical Church A Holiday Tradition

(La Porte, IN) -A miniature mechanical church that’s been a Christmas season tradition in La Porte since 1947 is back for public viewing.

The Giese Church is at the La Porte County Historical Society Museum.

As usual, it’ll be on display throughout the season and on December 20 for a special public viewing at the museum from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Hot cocoa and cookies will be provided.

According to local historians, Otto Giese spent Christmas in 1944 serving the country in Belgium as a soldier during World War II. With shells and bombs from the Germans exploding, he quickly made a vow to God if he made it back home alive he would do something to remember and preserve the true spirit of Christmas.

Soon, Giese found himself in the five-week-long Battle of the Bulge, the last major German offensive of the war in Europe that led to Germany’s defeat.

In 1947, Giese fulfilled his promise by making the church, featuring an altar, pulpit, chandeliers, a balcony, and pews on the inside, as well as stained glass windows.

Giese placed it on the lawn of his funeral home on Harrison Street, where it was visited by an estimated 10,000 people during the first holiday season it was on display.

Christmas music played from within the church twice a day every Sunday. Tiny electric lights were added to the chandeliers the following year. In 1950, a conveyor system allowing robed wooden choir members holding candles to move down the aisle was added.

He later added a moving wooden pastor who enters the altar and turns toward the congregation before delivering a sermon. The voice of the pastor is of the late Ken Coe, once the longtime owner of radio stations WLOI and WCOE in LaPorte.

After retiring in 1978, Giese donated the church to the LaPorte County Historical Society Museum, where electrical experts and other professional volunteers have kept it maintained over the years.

Giese was 90 when he ultimately passed away in 2002.

Short Term Rental Restrictions Under Review

(Harbert, MI) - Whether to tighten restrictions on short term rentals in Chikaming Township received more public comment during a special meeting to strictly hear from citizens.

Over 100 people turned out for the Monday night meeting at the Chikaming Township Fire Station about 10 miles north of New Buffalo.

Some people felt the solution is not to impose a cap on the number of short term rentals but, instead, tougher enforcement to reduce complaints from residents about things such as loud parties, lack of sufficient parking and garbage piled high.

One resident proposed short term rental owners lose their operating permits on the third violation at their properties to get a handle on disruption in residential neighborhoods.

Jason Milovich, owner of Bluefish Vacation Rentals, said effective enforcement, not more restrictions, would be the best action to avoid punishing every short term rental owner “for the actions of a few.”

Resident Donna Pape suggested limiting the use of swimming pools and hot tubs from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. “like they do in hotels” to reduce noise.  She also said some of the parties with large numbers of guests are more appropriate for “Las Vegas.  Not our community.”

A number of citizens also voiced opposition to the 90 day moratorium on new short term rentals, claiming it’s already noticeably dropped the value of their homes since imposed about six weeks ago.

The values are higher if homes are allowed to be used for another income source.

Ed Bancroft of Lakeside was worried about he and his wife losing their ability to occasionally rent the cottage where he lives full-time for necessary income.

“To have it available to rent is an important part of us being able to keep the cottage and also to pass it on to our adult children,” he said.

Township Supervisor David Bunte said there are 517 registered short term rentals, which make up about 10 percent of all parcels available in the township.

A number of citizens pointed out the area has been a tourist destination for a century or more and limits on short term rentals would hurt the shops and other businesses that rely on visitors especially during the summer.

However, other residents argued there used to be a lot more businesses prior to homes with full time residents being increasingly converted into short term rentals.

Citizens like Janet Schrader complained about feeling isolated from neighbors once living there full-time being replaced by a constant rotation of short term rental guests.

“There used to be families in my neighborhood,” she said.

Other suggestions included restricting the number of guests to two people for every bedroom and limiting the use of a home as a short term rental to no more than 90 days a year.

Some residents felt the biggest problem is companies buying multiple homes strictly to turn them into temporary lodging facilities, accelerating the reduction in full-time residents.

Short term rental owner Jason Sutton said there are no longer the number of manufacturing jobs that once supported and attracted the amount of families that once lived here.

“There’s not enough industry to have more neighbors than short term rentals,” he said.

Bunte said over 120 public comments on the issue have been voiced in e-mails on top of the 40 people who spoke publicly at a previous input seeking session.

“We realize there will not be a perfect solution.  We hope to be able to find a middle ground that work for the township and preserves the community,” he said.

New Drone for New Carlisle Fire Department

(New Carlisle IN) - The New Carlisle Fire Department has a new emergency drone.

The equipment, valued at over $15,000, features high resolution imaging and thermal technology, giving the department helpful eyes in the sky. The drone will assist crews in pre-planning for emergency events, providing aerial perspectives during fires, supporting search and rescue operations, and improving overall situational awareness during complex incidents.

Partial funding for the drone was provided by OmniSource, a scrap metal recycler east of town on Smilax Road. Known as “the Shredder” by locals, it was not too long ago the site of multiple serious fire calls. The site, now under new management, seems to have turned over a new leaf, according to fire department officials, starting with major safety enhancements at the facility. Omni also provides firefighters with vehicles for extrication training and a location onsite for the training.

“These efforts reflect a strong commitment to being a responsible and engaged community partner,” the department said in a press release. “The donation of this drone underscores Omni’s dedication to supporting public safety initiatives and strengthening its relationship with the residents and first responders of New Carlisle.”

The New Carlisle Fire Department services all of the industrial sites east of town and is hoping to build another fire house in that area as soon as funding can be determined.

Michigan City Bomb Threat Deemed a Swatting Incident

(Michigan City, IN) - Holiday shopping at the Michigan City Walmart was disrupted Wednesday afternoon by an alleged bomb threat.

According to the Michigan City Police Department, officers arrived at the Supercenter on Franklin Street at about 3:00 p.m. in response to a possible bomb at the location.

A Porter County Bomb Squad and the La Porte County Sheriff’s Department K9 Division completed a sweep of the store, finding no bomb or credible threat. The Walmart has returned to normal operations.

Continuing the investigation, the Detective Bureau determined that the original threat was the result of a swatting call. Swatting is when someone with ill intent contacts law enforcement about a false emergency at a targeted location, hoping to cause a large-scale response by law enforcement. A number of swatting incidents recently have been directed towards state elected officials.

Authorities Investigating State Lawmaker Swattings

(Lowell, IN) - Indiana State Police are investigating several recent instances of "swatting" where several members of the state legislature were targeted.

Swatting is where someone with ill intent contacts law enforcement about a false emergency at a targeted location.  The result is to cause a large scale response law enforcement.

ISP is warning the public not only is this potentially dangerous to all involved but swatting is also against the law.

In addition to state police, local, county, and federal law enforcement authorities are working together to try and identify those responsible for these illegal activities.

At least three senators were targeted between November 16 and 20.  The three confirmed victims are all Republicans who were against the special session to redistrict Indiana's congressional maps.

School Principal of Year from La Porte

(La Porte, IN) - A La Porte school administrator has been recognized for being one of the best in his profession.

Bill Wilmsen has been named the 2025 principal of the year in District 2 of the Indiana Association of School Principals.  The association has 12 districts in the state.

Wilmsen is principal at the Kesling campus, which consists of the Kesling Intermediate School and La Porte Middle School.

According to school officials, Wilmsen has brought “cohesion, clarity and shared purpose” to grades five through eight.  He’s also unified staff around common goals and created a culture of belonging and academic excellence.

Bison Hoopster Commits to College

(New Buffalo, MI) - A New Buffalo High School senior boys’ basketball player will compete next year at the college level.

Sam Tripp has signed a letter of intent to play at Kuyper College, a Christian school at Grand Rapids in the National Christian College Athletic Association. During a brief signing ceremony Tuesday at New Buffalo High School, Tripp was joined by his parents and siblings.

“I want to thank my family, of course, for always being there and helping out.  I love you guys,” he said.  Tripp, a 6’1” guard, was heavily recruited by Kuyper College, who cited things like his ability to shoot and be like a coach on the floor during games for their high level of interest.

“The thing I like is he can really think the game,” said Tyler Whitcomb, a former longtime assistant coach turned athletics liaison at the school this year.  He said Tripp’s dedication to improving his game and work in the classroom were among the other factors in deciding to pursue Tripp.

Whitcomb said the challenge for Tripp in his first season will be to find a role on a team with a lot of returning players, excel at it and grow.  “I think he has a lot of potential to even get better and better,” he said.

Tripp and several of his teammates have been in the starting line up at the varsity level since they were freshman during a major rebuilding after the senior laden Bison lost in the regional finals the previous season.

The team has advanced from winning just one game that year to reaching the district finals last season.  Tripp has been a little bit of everything on the court such as playmaker, a scoring threat from beyond the three point line and a solid defender.

School Honored for Dedication to Military

(Indianapolis, IN) - Kingsford Heights Elementary School has been awarded a Purple Star School designation by the Indiana Department of Education.

The award given annually is for schools serving a community born from America’s World War II efforts.  The Town of Kingsford Heights was created from homes constructed to house workers at the former Kingsbury Ordnance Plant where ammunition for the military was manufactured.

At its peak, the plant employed more than 20,000 workers.  To earn the designation, school must meet criteria such as appointing a military liaison, maintaining a dedicated web page for military families, offering professional development for staff on the unique challenges of military life and maintaining an effective transition program for incoming military students.

“We are incredibly honored to receive this recognition,” said Kingsford Heights Elementary School Principal Holly Wireman.

Police say it appears he traveled from Valparaiso to New Buffalo Township to purchase the drugs from a dispensary.

Amazon Investing into More Data Centers

Those would be in addition to the one already under construction outside New Carlisle.

Amazon said it will add 1,100 new jobs and 2.4 gigawatts of data center capacity to the region. The company did not reveal where specifically they might be looking to add more data centers.

Despite speculation, La Porte County officials maintain no formal requests for a data center have been submitted to county government.

The company also disclosed an energy agreement with NIPSCO, saying it will benefit customers and strengthen the state's electric grid.

Governor Mike Braun called the agreement a “massive win” for ratepayers.

Zig Zagging Slow Driver Arrested for OWI

(La Porte County, IN) - Police say a La Porte area woman posing a major danger to other drivers was seriously impaired.

Kathleen Sass, 71, is charged in La Porte Circuit Court with Class A misdemeanor operating while intoxicated.

Police said another driver following her Friday night on U.S. 421 reported she was veering over the center line, traveling slower than the posted speed limit and allowing her turn signal to keep blinking even though she wasn’t turning.

During a traffic stop near Michigan City, police said Sass explained she had consumed two margaritas with the last one being several hours ago.

However, Sass after stepping out of the vehicle was grabbed by an officer to keep her from falling. Her alleged blood alcohol level was .289 percent.

Police said Sass was also given a warning ticket for unsafe lane movement.

OWI For Reckless Driving Father

(La Porte County, IN) - A reckless driver claiming to be in a hurry to pick up his children is facing allegations of drunk driving.

Bryan Gillespie, 25, was arrested Friday evening for operating while intoxicated.

La Porte County Police said an officer responded to a report of a reckless driver by another motorist, who was nearly forced off the road by the suspect in the area of U.S. 20 and Indiana 2.

The motorist estimated his speed at more than 100 mph.

Police said the officer was positioned at U.S. 20 and 525 West when he spotted the westbound suspect, who stopped for a traffic light a short time later.

When the light turned green, the suspect accelerated rapidly enough for the officer to hear the roar of his engine, police said.

Eventually, he pulled over for the officer who had to travel more than 80 mph. to catch up.  The South Bend man said he was in a hurry to pick up his children in Michigan City, according to police.

He was arrested with an alleged blood alcohol level of .139 percent.

Investigators are still waiting for blood test results to determine if alcohol or drugs were a factor in the accident.

Woman Rescued After Falling Into Water

(Michigan City, IN) - What was originally believed to be a possible drowning at Michigan City’s lakefront Monday  morning turned out to be a successful rescue.

Emergency responders about 8:30 a.m. (CST) responded to the 800 dock in the Heisman Harbor at Washington Park.

Upon arrival, Michigan City Fire Department Capt. Jeff Bruder said a middle aged woman with a life jacket on was discovered in the water clinging to a pylon at the dock where her sailboat was anchored.

Bruder said a ladder belonging to the fire department was lowered from the dock into the water.  The conscious and alert woman after making her way over to the ladder climbed the steps on her own and was helped onto the dock.

Bruder said she was taken to the hospital to be checked for hypothermia as a precaution because of the water temperature being 49 degrees.

“It’s one of those calls we like to go on where nobody is really hurt,” he said.

Bruder said the investigation shows the woman fell off the back of the boat. Her husband tried pulling her out but was not able to and waited for rescuers after calling 911.

Michigan City Assistant Harbormaster Mary Ann Pawlicke said the deadline for boats to be out of the water at the harbor for the season is November 1. She said the boat was still docked because of engine troubles.

Pawlicke said the couple was there preparing to have the boat taken out of the water for winter storage when the woman slipped and fell into the water.

“Everything is o.k.  Fortunately, she had her life jacket on,” she said.

Fiske Stepping Up for Girls & Boys Club

(Agoura Hills, California) - A former Michigan City High School football star will be plugging a local charity during an upcoming NFL game.

Braden Fiske, who now plays defensive end for the Los Angeles Rams, will be wearing custom cleats representing the local Boys & Girls Club during this Sunday’s game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

The promotion is part of the NFL’s “My Cause My Cleats” campaign.

“It’s an important cause to me,” said Fiske in a video produced by the Rams.  “Every kid deserves to have a chance to have a safe haven, you know, after school to have mentors, to get support academically and socially outside of school.”

Fiske’s specially designed shoes are blue and white with stars and prominently feature “Boys & Girls Club of La Porte County,” the organization’s logo, as well as this region’s area code, 219. Fiske said a college classmate from his days at Western Michigan, Blake Bosma, came up with the design.

In a press conference recently, Fiske admitted that he has always worn all-white cleats, but after donning a more stylish shoe a couple of weeks ago, he recorded his first sack of the season. Perhaps the My Cause cleats will also help his stat line, and hopefully the publicity does some good for the local Boys & Girls Club. Click HERE to learn more or to donate.

Once Doomed School a National Finalist

(La Porte County, IN) - A local grade school once on the verge of closing is receiving national recognition.

Kingsford Heights Elementary is among a handful of schools still in the running for a national award for things like academic achievement.

Recently, the school received from the Indiana Department of Education a certificate recognizing the school as a National ESEA Distinguished School nominee.

La Porte Schools Superintendent Dr. Sandra Wood said the school is a top 5 finalist for the award, “which is an extraordinary achievement in a Title 1 setting.”  Title 1 schools receive federal dollars intended to help students in low income communities meet challenging academic standards and assist students falling behind or at-risk of falling behind.

Eligibility is often based on the percentage of students who qualify for free or reduced-price lunch with a common threshold being 40%.

The school was targeted for closure last year to reduce costs in response to revenue losses from over 10 years of gradual districtwide enrollment declines.

After considerable push back from the community, the school was kept open and Lincoln Elementary School, instead, was closed.

Knox Player Trails Just NFL Star as Rushing King

(Knox, IN) - The incredible season of a high school football team from the area continues tonight.

The undefeated Knox Redskins are playing in the state Class 3A semi-finals at Ft. Wayne Bishop Luers.   In addition, their quarterback is hoping to break the all-time high school career rushing yards record in the nation.

Myles McLaughlin trails only NFL superstar running back, Derrick Henry.  He needs 365 yards rushing to break the mark.  McLaughlin told Michana Sports he’s surprised at his performance this season.

“It’s definitely really crazy.  I never would have thought that would happen to me,” he said.

McLaughlin is averaging about 11 yards per carry this season.

40 Years in Prison for Sex Crime Spree

(Michigan City, IN) - A Michigan City sex offender is being put behind bars for a long time.

Demarcus Williams has been given a 40 year prison sentence.  He was about to stand trial last month when he decided to plead guilty to attempted rape, child molesting and burglary.  Authorities say the 35 year old Williams was arrested after several phone calls were placed to 911.  The calls were about a suspect breaking into homes and trying to sexually assault several victims during a two hour timeframe in 2020.

On one occasion, authorities said neighbors heard the screams of a woman and stopped her from being raped by yelling at Williams, who took off running.

Murder for Hire Plot Ends with Time in Prison

(La Porte, IN) - A La Porte man has been sentenced for trying to hire a hitman to kill the mother of his children and her new boyfriend.

Daniel Shaffer was given a 21 year prison sentence.  A La Porte Circuit Court jury in August found him guilty on two counts of conspiracy to commit murder.  Authorities said the 47 year old Shaffer was in the La Porte County Jail in 2023 on auto theft related allegations when he tried to hiring a hitman through an inmate he thought could make arrangements for that to happen.

The investigation shows Shaffer was involved in a child custody dispute and wanted the mother and her new boyfriend killed before the case was decided. His alleged plan was exposed before it could be carried out, though, with help from undercover officers inside the jail acting on a tip.  Shaffer could have received an up to 30 year sentence on each count.

Holifield Hears Name Calling Criticism Again

(La Porte County, IN) - A La Porte County official has been publicly criticized again for his use of words some people find offensive.

The latest criticism was uttered during the public comment portion of last night’s La Porte County Commissioners meeting by La Porte resident Susan Antoszewski.

Antoszewski singled out Commissioner Steve Holifield, who during a commissioners meeting last month called some people posting things on social media “cowardly losers on Facebook.”

“If you cannot represent citizens equally and without resorting to juvenile name calling, perhaps, you should step down,” she said.  Holifield, who’s been critical of name calling and misinformation in many social media posts, thanked her for her remarks.

No further response was offered by Holifield, a Mill Creek area farmer who was criticized a few months ago for calling La Porte County Councilman Justin Kiel a boy.  Kiel is in his late 20’s.  When reached this afternoon, Holifield said his choice of words reflects who he is and doesn’t believe he crossed the line.

“I don’t feel I acted inappropriately.  This is the way I’ve acted with my business.  My whole life,” he said. Holifield said he used the word cowardly to describe people leaving negative and incorrect posts anonymously.  He invited people to get their facts straight before posting.  “They can come to our office and ask questions anytime they want,” he said.

It's scheduled November 27 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.  The free meal is offered as a gathering place for anyone seeking food, fellowship, or a warm and welcoming place to spend the holiday.

“With so many in our community struggling, we want to make sure everyone has a place to enjoy a delicious Thanksgiving meal, and, just as importantly, a place to share connection and conversation. Nobody should have to spend Thanksgiving alone,” said Major Becky Simmons, who leads The Salvation Army in La Porte County along with Major Dale Simmons.

The meal will include turkey, ham, traditional side dishes, and desserts.  Guests may dine in the Salvation Army chapel at 1201 Franklin Street or pick up warm meals to go.

New Lawmaker Getting Feet Wet in Indianapolis

(Indianapolis, IN) - A new state lawmaker locally has been assigned to help with matters involving Mother Nature.  District 9 State Representative Randy Novak (D-Michigan City) will serve on the Natural Resources Committee and the Environmental Affairs Committee in the Indiana House.

“My committee assignments give me a direct platform to advocate for the challenges and opportunities in Northwest Indiana. Our district has a unique relationship with Lake Michigan and the environment around us, and it’s our responsibility to protect that,” he said.

The appointments were made during the annual Organization Day Wednesday at the statehouse.  Organization Day is held before the state legislature meets the following year beginning in January to consider and decide pieces of proposed legislation offered by lawmakers in the House and Senate.

Novak is serving the remainder of the term of Pat Boy, who retired after serving as the District 9 state representative since 2019.  He was voted into the seat last month by democratic precinct committeepersons from the district.

“I didn’t get here the traditional way, and that makes me even more humble to have this responsibility. It’s an honor to sit in this chamber and represent District 9. I’m grateful for the trust placed in me and I’m ready to show people that I’m here to work,” he said.

Novak also said he will reach across party lines to try and get things accomplished and plans to stay away from the type of political fighting that’s become a priority over real local needs to the dismay of many Hoosiers.

“Folks are worried about whether they can afford their heat bill this winter, whether their children are receiving a strong education and if their taxpayer dollars are truly being invested back into their communities that serve them. They expect legislators who listen, collaborate and move Indiana forward. I intend to be one of them,” he said.

Novak was a longtime member of the La Porte County Council prior to taking his seat at the statehouse.   He was also fire chief in Michigan City when he decided a few years ago to retire from the department.

Beefed Up Patrols During Holidays

(La Porte County, IN) - The La Porte County Sheriff’s Office is partnering with the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute to keep roads safe and prevent traffic fatalities during the holidays.

The upcoming effort is part of the annual Safe Family Travel campaign supported by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

From November 26 through the end of December, the campaign will focus on impaired driving, aggressive driving and seat belt violations. During this time, deputies will conduct saturation patrols to deter unsafe driving and encourage seat belt use.   “We see the consequences of unsafe driving every day,” said ICJI Executive Director Douglas Huntsinger.

According to NHTSA, alcohol-impaired driving remains one of the leading causes of fatal crashes, especially during the holiday season.  Likewise, failure to wear a seat belt continues to be one of the most preventable causes of death on roadways.

“Driving safely is a shared responsibility,” said La Porte County Police Capt.  Derek J. Allen.   “If you plan to consume alcohol, plan a safe ride home.  Stay sober behind the wheel or arrange a sober ride before the night begins,” he said.

Growth an Emphasis in Mayor's Speech

(La Porte, IN) - La Porte Mayor Tom Dermody emphasized things like growth during his 6th annual State of the City speech last night.

He said growth in areas like jobs and new housing have been identified as key for local governments to survive reductions in revenue beginning next year from statewide property tax reductions.

Dermody pointed out new housing, for example, continues to go up in various areas of the city like it has the past few years and more is planned in the future to modernize an aging housing stock and draw additional residents.

One of the upcoming housing projects involves a developer receiving a $1 million state grant with help from the city to go toward construction of over 40 affordable new homes on separate parcels.  Dermody said the condition of streets remains a priority with six miles of road over the past 30 days being crack sealed to extend the life of the pavement.

Other highlights of the speech included the 39 North Conservancy District and promises being kept by the city to improve water flows and capacity in exchange for the city annexing that area last year.  He said the work required to improve the water system is on schedule and now includes two new water towers to be erected instead of one as originally planned.

Dermody said more new development for the annexed area has lined up to start building once the improvements has been completed.  “We can’t wait to share more updates soon,” he said.

He also cited other successes like La Porte placing second for best small town in the Midwest from USA Today, return of the La Porte Invitational college prep basketball competition in early January and over 23,000 rounds played this year at the city’s Beechwood Golf Course.  He ended what was about a half hour speech by saying “no” cannot be an option in fully realizing the city's potential.

“We will continue to do right by you, the residents of our city, to make La Porte all that we know it can be,” he said.

Cost of Thanksgiving Dinner Mostly Unchanged

(Indianapolis, IN) - Hoosiers will not see much change in the cost for an average Thanksgiving dinner for 10 people this year.

According to Indiana Farm Bureau, Indiana residents will pay an average of $53.62 for the meal, or $5.36 per person.  That’s an increase of just 0.6%, or three cents per person from 2024.

Indiana’s price is around 3% lower, or 16 cents less, than the national average price of $55.18 for the 10-person dinner, or $5.81 per person, INF said.

Todd Davis, the bureau’s chief economist, said Indiana has seen an increase in the price of some produce, including carrots, celery, sweet potatoes and peas.

“Those retail prices reflect an increase in factors beyond the farm gate, including transportation, labor, fuel, packaging and more that contribute to the overall increased cost of the product,” he said.

The prices of other items, including stuffing, milk and turkey, are reportedly lower than last year in Indiana, as well as nationally, INF said.

Township Merger Proposal Defeated

(La Porte County, IN) - A proposed merger between local township governments will not happen.

The New Durham Township Board last night voted 2 to 1 against merging with Center and Springfield townships.

Center Township Trustee Lisa Pierzakowski said the Center Township and Springfield Township boards voted in favor of the merger but approval from all three governing bodies was required for adoption.

“It didn’t happen, so, there’s no merger,” she said.

Pierzakowski said Center and Springfield townships could still consider merging together but there isn’t enough time in the procedure that must be followed to take action this year.

The earliest a merger could happen is 2027 because township mergers cannot be decided in an election year and there are elections in La Porte County in 2026.

Pierzakowski supported the proposed merger to save money to help make up for lost revenue local governments will begin seeing next year from statewide property tax reductions adopted by the Indiana legislature six months ago.

She also felt it was best to merge now before the state legislature looking to cut government costs possibility requires townships statewide to merge and possibility in a manner unfavorable to local residents.

“I feel it was good for the community,” she said.

Thousands of Dollars Lost in Phone Scam

(La Porte County, IN) - A La Porte County woman was phone scammed out of $5,000.

According to the sheriff’s office, the 70 year old woman was contacted by a man claiming he was with an identity theft agency in Washington D.C.

He also told the woman that her social security number was stolen and used to make purchases nationwide and overseas.

Police said the man also claimed he was working to solve the case but needed money to further the investigation.  As instructed, she mailed three to four money orders to an address in California over about a one month period.

The woman, who lives near Stillwell, called police last night when she discovered it was a scam.

Drug Dealer Charged in Overdose Death

(La Porte, IN) - A man is accused of selling the drugs that caused a La Porte woman to die over a year ago.

Michael Hart, 26, of Michigan City is charged in La Porte Circuit Court with dealing in a controlled substance resulting in death, a Level 1 felony.

He could face anywhere from a 20 to 40 year sentence.

In August of last year, authorities said he met Bailee Hoops in Michigan City and sold her narcotics.  The investigation shows the 30 year old Hoops returned to her home in the 1300 block of Kingsporte Lane where she was found dead the next morning by her live-in boyfriend.

Police said fentanyl and methamphetamine were found in her system.

According to authorities, Hart told investigators he purchased the drugs in Chicago and he had known Hoops for a long time.

Dismissed Charges Refiled in Murder

(Michigan City, IN) - A man whose murder charge was dismissed is again accused of being involved in the fatal shooting in Michigan City.

Cevin Crawford, 27, of Michigan City is now charged with aiding, inducing or causing murder after additional evidence was collected and presented to a judge who ruled there was probable cause for him to answer to the allegations.  Crawford was ordered to be held in the La Porte County Jail on $1 million cash bond.

After his murder charge was dismissed on August 19, authorities later charged Daquvay Sherrod, 35, of Michigan City with murder for the death. How Crawford allegedly assisted with the murder was not revealed.  Dante Sellers, 25, of La Porte was fatally shot August 3 near Matey’s, a restaurant and bar near the lakefront.  Police said the shooting happened following a heated verbal exchange inside the establishment.

Lakers Eye Return to National Tourney

(La Porte County, IN) - The boys’ high school basketball team at La Lumiere with practically all new faces is off to an undefeated start to the season.

Head Coach Pat Holmes believes this year’s team has what it takes to get the program back into the national tournament and win it again.  The Lakers were not among the eight teams receiving bids for last year’s tournament, which the Lakers won in 2017.

“This is the most talented team we’ve had in a while, the last five or six years. I really like this group,” he said.

The Lakers opened the season on November 7 with a 98-70 win at home against Bosco Institute from Crown Point, Ind.  Two more home games ended in blowout victories the following week against Jordan Christian Prep out of Florida and Stony Brook School from New York.

The La Lumiere roster includes 6’3” point guard Jonathan Sanders, a lightning quick senior from Ann Arbor, Michigan and center Gon Solango, a 7’ foot, 270 pound senior from Mongolia.  Sanders and Solango are committed to play next season at the University of Notre Dame.

Jacob Wheeler, a 6’6” senior forward from Nebraska and Rivers Knight, a 6’9” senior forward from North Carolina have signed to play next season at Purdue University.

Another senior, Gabe Weiss, a 6’7” forward, has committed to the University of Western Kentucky.

The roster also includes a number of highly ranked juniors such as 6’3” Devin Cleveland out of Chicago; 6’2” Peyton Kemp from the Detroit area and 6’8” Ferlandes Wright from Louisville, Kentucky.

Despite 11 new members on the team, Holmes said the players seem to have gelled quickly and embraced their individual roles on the court.

“They’re a very competitive group, which is what we needed,” he said.

Holmes said the team last year didn’t perform as well as expected and hopes the fast start this year will lead to a second national championship banner going up inside Marsch Gymnasium.

“We need another one.  We got the group who can do it.  Got to stay healthy but we got talented guys that play really well together and have a chance to beat anyone in the country,” he said.

Lakers/Wolves to Play Next Month

(La Porte County, IN) - The high school boys’ basketball teams at La Lumiere and Michigan City will play each other this season.

The game could be a little lopsided considering La Lumiere recruits players from all over the world and routinely is ranked in the top 10 nationwide.  Head Coach Pat Holmes is not taking anything for granted, though, against the Wolves.  “The thing with high school basketball, man, is you got to bring it every single night,” he said. The game is scheduled December 9 at La Lumiere.

So far, the Lakers are 3 and 0 on the season with every win being a blowout.  Both teams are also scheduled to play next year at Michigan City High School.

Deer Collisions Have Spiked

(La Porte County, IN) - There’s been a big jump in the number of motor vehicle crashes with deer in La Porte County.  Sheriff Ron Heeg said his office handled 54 car vs deer crashes last month compared to 21 in September.

Heeg said a noticeable increase is typical for this time of year from deer being chased out of corn fields by harvesting machines and running from hunters.  “The deer crashes exponentially spike.  November is probably going to continue staying high for us,” he said.

Deer are also on the run more right now because it’s mating season for the animals. According to police, drivers who see a deer in the road should brake and not swerve to avoid running off the road and possibly overturning.  In 2024, Indiana reported over 17,000 car vs deer crashes that resulted in nine fatalities and just over 700 injuries.

Youth Football Team Looking to Repeat as Champs

(La Porte, IN) - A La Porte Pop Warner Football team has taken another step toward repeating as national champs.

The 11U team won the regional championship Saturday 26-7 against a squad from Youngstown, Ohio.  The team was given a police escort on their way back to La Porte from the downtown U.S. 35 overpass to Walmart on the city’s east side.

Mayor Tom Dermody greeted the team by asking the players if they’re going to win the national championship again and giving credit to the coaches who are volunteering their time to the talented team.  “They are making La Porte proud,” he said.  The team won the national championship last season by defeating a team from Pennsylvania 39 to 6.

Dryer Causes Early Morning Fire

(Michigan City, IN) - There was minor damage in a house fire this morning in Michigan City.

According to the fire department, damage was limited mostly to a clothes dryer, which caused the fire in the 700 block of Earl Road.  There was also minimal smoke and water damage.

Fans were used to remove smoke from the structure mostly in the basement. The family was able to continue living in the residence, officials said.  No injuries were reported.

Local Store Chain Being Sold

(La Porte County, IN) - A local hardware store chain, which has been locally owned for over a century, is being sold.

Houchens Food Group has agreed to purchase Kabelin Ace Hardware.  The Bowling Green, Kentucky based company is a subsidiary of Houchens Industries, Inc., one of the largest, most diversified 100 percent employee-owned firms in the nation.

Kabelin Ace Hardware has eight stores in South Bend, Walkerton, New Carlisle, Granger and two retail locations apiece in La Porte and Michigan City.  Mackenzie Kabelin Watkins said her family is proud of the business they built but it just became increasingly difficult nowadays to operate as a small independent retailer.

The stores, known for their customer service, will continue to function under the Kabelin Ace Hardware name, leadership and local management.  All 150 employees will be retained during the transition.

“We knew we wanted to continue the Kabelin legacy, but we wanted to do it from a position of strength while also giving back to our employees,” Mackenzie Kabelin Watkins  said.

Watkins said she also believes the partnership formed under the acquisition will secure “the future of our company while also ensuring the longevity of our stores and serving the people that matter most, our employees and our communities.”

Houchens Food Group operates more than 40 Ace Hardware stores across the country and more than 400 grocery, convenience and quick service restaurant locations.  It was announced that Watkins will continue her leadership role as Director of Operations for the Kabelin Ace division of Houchens Food Group.

Joe Wardman, a longtime hardware retailer following in the footsteps of his father and grandfather with the Kabelin family, will become Regional Operational Specialist within the company to help drive interactions with customers on a day to day basis.  Kabelin Ace Hardware will also keep the same community minded focus at all eight of its locations and have an opportunity to open new stores in adjacent markets.

“Kabelin has built an outstanding reputation for quality service and hometown care which are values that align perfectly with our mission.  As an employee-owned company, we believe in empowering local teams to continue that legacy while providing the resources and support to help our business grow and thrive,” said Houchens Food Group President Greg Rush.

Speeding Teen Driver Charged with Crime

(La Porte County, IN) - A teenager was given a court date for driving nearly twice the speed limit on Johnson Road outside La Porte.

Jacob Long, 18, was given a summons to appear in court for reckless driving, a Class C misdemeanor.  La Porte County Police said an officer about 1 p.m. on Saturday clocked a 2008 Chevy Impala operated by Long at 83 miles per hour near the Indiana Toll Road overpass.  The speed limit on Johnson Road is 45 miles per hour.  Long must appear in La Porte Superior Court 3 on December 5 or a warrant could be issued for his arrest, police said.  The charge could bring an up to 60 day jail sentence and maximum $500 fine.

Officers Save Life of Overdose Victim

(La Porte County, IN) - A man overdosing on drugs in the Michigan City area seemed near death until given Narcan by emergency responders overnight.

Just after midnight, La Porte County Police responded to a report of a man overdosing in the 3800 block of N. 600 West.

Officers found a 27 year old man lying on his back on the floor near a kitchen sink having serious trouble breathing.  He was also unresponsive even after a medical procedure designed to wake him failed to do so, police said.   After a second dose of Narcan, the man later identified as Jacob Lemons, eventually, regained consciousness.

Police said a syringe was found on his possession before he was transported to a hospital.  A warrant is being sought for his arrest on Level 6 felony possession of a hypodermic syringe, police said.  The charge is punishable by a six month to 30 month sentence.

Downtown Ice Skating Rink to Return

(La Porte, IN) - The ice skating rink in downtown La Porte will return for the season.  Once again, it’ll be at State and Monroe streets beginning the day after Thanksgiving through Winterfest, which runs January 23-25.

Park Department Superintendent Mark Schreiber said there was an 80 percent increase in the number of people using the rink last year over the previous season.  “That means more families are enjoying a healthy winter activity while visiting our downtown,” he said.

The rink is refrigerated so there’s ice when temperatures rise above freezing.  Schreiber said promotions such as Free Skate Fridays will be offered again this year as well as sponsorship opportunities for the rink.  For more information, go to the park department website.

Alleged Meth Dealer Arrested

(Westville, IN) - A Westville woman is accused of selling methamphetamine.  Hope Horn, 51, was being held in the La Porte County Jail on $25,000 bond after taken into custody Wednesday on a warrant charging her with a Level 3 felony.

About three months ago, authorities said Horn sold $70 in methamphetamine from her home at Westville Estates.  The charge was elevated to a higher felony due to a child being in the home when the alleged transaction occurred, according to authorities. Horn could face anywhere from a three to 16 year sentence.

Man Admits to Selling Drugs

(La Porte, IN) - Sentencing is scheduled for a La Porte drug dealer.  Shawn Ward has agreed to a seven year prison sentence followed by two years on probation under a guilty plea.

Over a year ago, authorities said he sold heroin and methamphetamine for $180 outside his residence in the area of Jackson and Noble streets.  The exchange occurred inside the buyer’s vehicle parked along the curb.  The 24 year old Ward will be sentenced if Judge Julianne Havens accepts the plea agreement during a hearing set for December 5 in La Porte Circuit Court. In exchange for the plea, one of the two counts against Ward would be dismissed.

Building Renovations Happening Downtown

(La Porte, IN) - Two longtime vacant buildings in downtown La Porte are being extensively remodeled for future use.

One of them is a five story structure on Monroe St. just north of Lincolnway. The plan there is to offer commercial space on the main level and apartments on the upper floors in one of the tallest buildings in the downtown, said Bert Cook, Executive Director of the La Porte Economic Advancement Partnership.

Cook said the building has been empty for at least 20 years.

“I’m sure it’s longer than that,” he said.

Cook said the work is about 30 percent completed.

The other building renovation is where La Porte Sporting Goods once existed until closing over a decade ago in the 900 block of Lincolnway across from the courthouse.

Cook said the plans there also call for commercial space on the main level and about a half dozen apartments on the second and third floors.  He estimated that project to be about halfway finished with completion expected in the spring.

Cook said the investment in the properties both owned by La Porte area residents will further the progress in the revitalization downtown has experienced over the past several years.

“You’re going to have two very new spaces in the downtown.  That’s terrific.  I think it just pushes that snowball we talk about.  The momentum that’s been created by the investment in downtown La Porte,” he said.

I.C.E. Holds at Jail Double

(La Porte County, IN) - The number of La Porte County Jail inmates released to U.S. immigration authorities for allegedly being in the country illegally has about doubled over the past six months.

La Porte County Police Capt. Derek Allen said 76 inmates since November 19 of last year have had detainers placed on them by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (I.C.E.)

Inmates with detainers are held until picked up by I.C.E. to verify whether they’re in the country illegally and, if so, deport them.

Allen said 69 of the suspected illegal alien inmates since booked into the jail have been released to I.C.E.  Typically, I.C.E. places them into a holding facility in Chicago until there’s a decision on whether to return them to their country of origin.

Allen said the seven others held in La Porte County Jail on I.C.E. detainers were transferred to other counties and states to face pending charges in those jurisdictions.

The total number of suspected illegal alien offenders booked into the jail from late last year to the end of May stood at 34. In comparison, Allen said I.C.E. placed holds on just two suspected illegal alien inmates from the jail in 2024.

I.C.E. has been more aggressively enforcing U.S. immigration laws under the direction of President Donald Trump, who’s following through on his promise of mass deportations since taking office on January 20.

In following standard procedure, Allen said the sheriff’s office notifies ICE whenever an arrest is made of an individual believed to be in the country illegally.

He said it is then up to ICE to decide whether to place a hold on the inmates and later pick them up to investigate their legal status in the country.

I.C.E. Places Hold on Suspected Illegal Alien

(Porter County, IN) - A suspected illegal alien living in the area could be deported.  Indiana State Police said 35 year old Daniel Ramirez was found with a large amount of cocaine during a Monday traffic stop in Porter County.

The man living in Knox was caught speeding on Indiana 49 Monday despite snow and ice covered roads.  Police said Ramirez didn’t pull over right away but, eventually, he stopped near a ramp to U.S. 30.  The cocaine weighing 11 grams was in four brick shaped packages and found after a K-9 dog alerted to the presence of drugs in the vehicle, police said.  Police said a hold on Ramirez was placed by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (I.C.E.) for possible deportation.

Human Remains from 1980's Identified

(Berrien County, MI) - Remains found along the Lake Michigan shoreline decades ago have been identified as a 71 year old woman from Chicago.

Dorothy Glanton was reported missing after leaving her home on December 9, 1987, according to Michigan State Police.  Four months later, police said the remains were recovered along the shoreline near New Buffalo.  In 2023, investigators reopened the case and asked for help from a nonprofit group specializing in genetic genealogy.

Police said DNA extracted from Glanton’s remains was analyzed and uploaded to genealogical databases, allowing researchers to construct a family tree that led to her identification.  “This identification brings closure to a family that has wondered for nearly four decades what happened to their loved one,” Sgt. John Moore, the lead detective on the case out of the MSP Niles Post.

Arrest Follows Drug Overdose

(La Porte, IN) - A woman is in the La Porte County Jail after overdosing with warrants out for her arrest.

Kristin Vanschoyk, 37, of Michigan City is charged with possession of methamphetamine and possession of cocaine, both Level 6 felonies, along with failure to return to lawful detention, a Level 6 felony, for allegedly not returning to the work release center as required under a previous conviction.

According to authorities, Vanschoyk on Friday went to the home of a cousin at Maple Tree Apartments in La Porte and injected methamphetamine in her bathroom.  A short time later, she was found slumped over in a chair by her cousin who called 911.

Police said firefighters and paramedics in response to her shallow breathing and not responding gave her Narcan to alleviate the symptoms of her overdose.

She woke up and was taken by ambulance to a hospital where less than a gram of methamphetamine and cocaine were allegedly recovered from her pants pockets.

According to police, she had multiple warrants out for her arrest.  She was being held in the La Porte County Jail on over $20,000 bond.

Governor Involved in Winter Driving Safety

After the first measureable snowfall of the season, Indiana Governor Mike Braun has joined the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT), Indiana State Police (ISP) and the Indiana Department of Homeland Security (IDHS) in coordinating efforts to keep Hoosiers safe this winter.

The Governor discussed winter weather operations, toured INDOT’s Indianapolis Subdistrict facility, and inspected the agency’s snow and ice removal fleet as part of Winter Weather Preparedness Week (Nov. 9-15).

“Keeping Hoosiers safe this winter season will take a collaborative effort between our state agencies and our citizens,” said Gov. Mike Braun. "Our INDOT crews, State Police, and first responders are fully equipped and ready to tackle the season’s challenges. I am urging every Hoosier to do their part: prepare your homes, plan your travel, and always give our dedicated crews the space they need to keep our state moving safely.”

INDOT Stands Ready

INDOT has spent recent months preparing for?winter?operations by hiring seasonal snowplow drivers, completing training with current staff, inspecting trucks and other equipment, and securing materials, like salt. Operations crews monitor forecasts several?weeks in advance?and prepare for?winter?storms based on the type of expected precipitation, conditions leading up to an event, and?extended forecasts. If conditions allow, roads are pre-treated with salt brine and are regularly treated with rock salt.

“Our plows are ready, salt barns are stocked, and we have plenty of drivers for the season, but safety on the roads depends on all of us,” said INDOT Commissioner Lyndsay Quist. “Please, when you’re out on the roads this winter, slow down, don’t crowd the plow and give our crews room to work.”

Preparing for Winter

Indiana winters bring snow, ice and freezing temperatures that can lead to power outages, dangerous travel conditions and other risks. ISP and IDHS are reminding Hoosiers to take steps now to prepare their homes, vehicles and travel plans.

“When winter weather strikes, our troopers are among the first on the scene, and visibility and road conditions can change in seconds,” said ISP Captain Ron Galaviz. “More than 4,500 crashes during the winter months last year were caused by people driving too fast for the weather conditions. We’re urging all Hoosiers to drive cautiously, buckle up and keep an emergency kit in your vehicle. If you see flashing lights, please slow down and move over.”

“Winter storms can be unpredictable, but preparation makes all the difference,” said IDHS Executive Director Jonathan Whitham. “By assembling emergency kits, winterizing vehicles and monitoring local advisories, Hoosiers can reduce their risk and help emergency responders focus on those who need help most.”

Winter Safety Tips

INDOT, ISP and IDHS recommend the following precautions for all Hoosiers:

  • Slow down and adjust your speed to road conditions, especially on snow covered roads.
  • Know before you go – check conditions and forecasts before you hit the road; allow plenty of time to reach your destination safely.
  • Don’t crowd the plow – never tailgate or drive beside a snowplow.
  • Leave extra space between your vehicle and the one in front of you; it takes extra time and distance to stop or slow down on snowy roads.
  • Prepare an emergency kit with snacks, water, a phone charger, sand or cat litter,?flares or bright LED alternatives, a?flashlight,?and blankets or extra clothing.
  • Keep vehicles maintained – Keep your vehicle full of gas and check your battery, fluids and spare tire.
  • Clear all snow and ice from your vehicle’s windows, lights, and signals.

OWI for Driver in Chase

(La Porte, IN) - A Union Mills man is accused of being drunk while leading police on a recent vehicle and foot chase.

David Williams , 48, was still being held in the La Porte County Jail on charges of operating while intoxicated and resisting law enforcement, both Level 6 felonies.

Police said Williams last Friday ran a red light in La Porte, triggering a chase down several streets.  Eventually, Williams turned down an alley in the area of Lincolnway and Tyler St., slowed down then jumped out of the vehicle, police said.

During a foot pursuit, he was struck with a taser gun and taken into custody.

Police said his blood alcohol level was nearly three times the .08 percent legal limit.  Williams could face a one to six year sentence on each count.  The OWI charge was upgraded from a misdemeanor due to a prior OWI conviction in St. Joseph County.

I.C.E. Places Hold on Man Arrested Here

(La Porte County, IN) - A man suspected of being in the country illegally was caught speeding in La Porte County but he didn’t pull over right away.

Joaquin Medina, 43, is charged with resisting law enforcement and operating a vehicle without ever obtaining a driver’s license.

According to La Porte County Police, he was clocked early Tuesday at 80 mph. in a 45 mph. zone on U.S. 30 in Wanatah.  The officer turned around and was following the vehicle when he attempted to make a traffic stop.

Medina, though, kept going for over eight miles before pulling over, police said.

Police said Medina told the officer he is from Mexico living currently in Ft. Wayne but came here illegally.  He’s currently being held in the La Porte County Jail without bond.

No bond is set because Medina has a hold placed on him by United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (I.C.E) for possible deportation once he’s found guilty or innocent of the charges he was arrested on.

Northern Lights in Full View Locally

(La Porte County, IN) - The Northern Lights were easily seen last night in La Porte County.

La Porte resident Mike Kellems took his camera a few miles to the west near Garwood Orchards and took pictures of the red and green colored lights in the sky.

Kellems said he’s seen the Northern Lights in the area a few times previously but the ones Tuesday might have been the most brilliant looking.

“The colors were just so vibrant, probably the best I have ever seen,” he said.

The Northern Lights are expected to return and be visible again locally tonight. Kellems called the experience last night “absolutely surreal.”

“The sky doesn’t normally turn that color,” he said.

Kellems said he was on patrol for the La Porte County Sheriff’s Office when he first saw the Northern Lights roughly 25 years ago.

“I saw this red glow in the sky.   It’s definitely a unique experience,” he said.

New River Monitoring System in Place

(St. Joseph County, IN) - A new Kankakee River monitoring system to guard against flooding is now in place.

A device keeping an eye on water levels is near the Crumstown Highway bridge over the river in St. Joseph County.

The Kankakee River Basin and Yellow River Basin Development Commission made the investment to monitor the levels closer to the headwaters of the river southwest of South Bend.

“Despite our existing fleet of flood monitors, the Commission has identified the need for real-time information about water levels near the Kankakee River’s source,” said Commission Executive Director Scott Pelath.

Pelath said the closest monitoring device was previously in La Porte County. The need for being closer to the headwaters is from major economic development happening near South Bend, he said.

The device’s measurements are now publicly viewable on both the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) website at water.noaa.gov and the Hydromet Cloud website at www.hydrometcloud.com.

Commission Treasurer Bill Crase from Starke County said the gauges are needed to reduce and respond to flooding.

“Not only do they contribute to public safety, but they develop a clearer picture of the Kankakee River’s behavior in response to heavy precipitation and snow melt. The data will also help local officials and engineers plan for regional development within the Kankakee watershed,” he said.

Man Charged with Child Sex Crimes

(Michigan City, IN) - A Michigan City man is facing allegations that he had multiple sexual encounters with a child.

Billy Cannon, 66, is charged in La Porte Superior Court 1 with five counts of Level 1 felony and Level 4 felony child molesting along with Level 3 felony rape.  Two misdemeanor counts of resisting law enforcement and inappropriate communication with a child were also filed against him.

According to Michigan City Police, an investigation included a search of his residence Friday where evidence was found to substantiate the allegations made by the victim.  He and the victim knew each other.

Police said further details about the alleged crimes were not revealed because of the investigation still being ongoing.

Judge Jamie Oss ordered the arrest Monday by ruling evidence from the case presented to her was sufficient enough to have Cannon answer to the allegations.

He was being held in the La Porte County Jail on $100,000 bond.

Cancelled Flight Causes Veteran to Miss Ceremony

(La Porte, IN) - A lifelong area resident missed his first Veterans Day ceremony in La Porte because of a cancelled flight.  Military veteran Rich Mrozinski of Rolling Prairie has been to every one since becoming a member of the mayor’s Veterans Committee more than 30 years ago.

The committee puts on the ceremony.  Mrozinski said his flight home from Florida where he spends much of the winter was cancelled last night due to reductions in the number of flights offered caused by the federal government shutdown.

“The airports are mess here in Florida, Well, all over, actually,” he said.  Mrozinski said he booked the flight in order to attend the 38th annual Veterans Day ceremony this morning at the Civic Auditorium. His plan now is to spend the holiday with other former military servicemen.

“I have a lot of veteran friends down here.  We’ll get together later for lunch,” he said.  Mrozinski, a former La Porte County Commissioner who also once served on the La Porte County Council, spent time in combat during the Vietnam War.  He's also been an advocate for veterans by going to Washington D.C. over the years at times to lobby on their behalf.

Plowed Snow Damages Vehicle

(La Porte County, IN) - A driver had her vehicle damaged Sunday afternoon by snow thrown off a La Porte County overpass east of Rolling Prairie.  La Porte County Police said the driver, Michelle Ellis, told investigators she was eastbound on U.S. 20 when her vehicle was hit with snow from a plow throwing snow off the west side of the Indiana 2 overpass.

The snow crashed onto her 2023 Suburu Impreza.  She immediately pulled over.

Police said the damage included a cracked windshield, broken left windshield wiper and the bumper and grill being broken and out of place.  A tow truck was called for the vehicle.  Ellis was not able to make contact with the driver of the snow plow, said police.

OWI Charge for Hit and Run Driver

(La Porte County, IN) - A man who caused a minor crash and fled near Michigan City was allegedly impaired.  La Porte County Police said Ruben Gonzalez, 57, had a blood alcohol level slightly more than three times the legal limit.

Police said the investigation shows a woman stopped at a traffic light was hit in the rear by Gonzalez Friday afternoon at 850 West and 400 North. It wasn’t long before the fleeing vehicle was located by police at Loves Truck Stop on U.S. 421 just south of Interstate 94.  Police said there were two open containers of beer and vodka in the vehicle’s cup holder.

Gonzalez was arrested for operating while intoxicated and leaving the scene of an accident, both Class A misdemeanors.  There was just minor damage to both vehicles.  Police said there were also no injuries.

Charges Filed in Fatal Summer Shooting

(Michigan City, IN) - An arrest has been made for a shooting death in Michigan City over the summer.

Daquvay Sherrod, 35, of Michigan City is charged in La Porte Superior Court 1 with murder and being held in the La Porte County Jail on $1 million bond.

He was taken into custody on November 6 after Judge Jamie Oss ruled the evidence presented to her by investigators was sufficient enough for him to answer to the allegations.

Sherrod allegedly killed Dante Sellers, who was found badly wounded across the street from Matey’s, a popular bar and grill near the city’s lakefront.

Police said the shooting happened following a heated exchange of words inside the establishment.  The 25 year old La Porte man died the next day at a Chicago hospital.

Originally, another man was held responsible but charges against him were dismissed a few weeks later after surveillance video from a different angle revealed the actual gunman, authorities said.

Sherrod could face anywhere from a 45 to 65 year sentence.

First Heavy Snowfall of Season

(La Porte County, IN) - The first snowfall of the season measured close to a foot in some locations.

The official total in the City of La Porte was 8.8 inches, according to the water department, which keeps track of daily precipitation amounts, including snowfall.

5.8 inches was on the ground by midnight.   Another three inches of snow came down until it stopped around 4 a.m., the water department reported.

La Porte Code Enforcement Director Jeff Batchelor said a majority of city streets were cleared of snow by daybreak from being out since early this morning.

“It’s been a battle just to stay up with it.   We’re making some headway now,” he said.

La Porte County Commissioner Steve Holifield estimated 10 to 12 inches of snow came down in Mill Creek where he lives and runs a farm.  He said there was also some blowing and drifting snow.

“That was quite a storm that came through,” said Holifield, whose power was still out this morning after he lost service about 10 p.m.

Michigan City resident Bob Johnson estimated at least five inches of snow was on the ground at his residence near Pahs Road.  Johnson said the main arteries he traveled early this morning were clear and so were many of the side streets from snow plows out early.

New Buffalo resident Bob Stratton said about eight inches of snow came down where he lives in the city.

According to the National Weather Service, a winter storm warning remains in effect until midnight.  Lake effect snow bands over the area have since moved to Chicago but are expected to return from a change in wind direction later today.

Another three to six inches of snow is predicted.

Close to 500 NIPSCO customers in the La Porte area were without power this morning while another 172 customers  of the utility were in the dark in the Michigan City area.

Another 444 customers of Indiana Michigan Power Company in the New Buffalo area lost power for about two hours Sunday afternoon.

Vote on New Carlisle Data Center Postponed

(St. Joseph County, IN) - The deciding vote on another proposed data center near New Carlisle has been postponed.

County officials have been considering a petition to rezone over 1,000 acres of farmland north of town between Timothy and Spruce Roads, south of Chicago Trail. Such a move would set the stage to build a data center for an unnamed tech company. Developers say the $12 billion total investment, the largest in state history, would include fourteen 60-foot-tall buildings for super computers.

New Carlisle’s Town Council and the Olive Township Trustee have submitted letters of remonstrance, and two levels of St. Joseph County government, the Area Plan Commission and a special committee of the Council, have also voted against the proposal. The full County Council was expected to cast the final vote on Wednesday, November 12. However, HTNN has learned that the Council has pushed back that vote to December 9.

According to Council member Amy Drake, the proposal, which she opposes, does not yet have enough votes to pass. The delay could be a stall tactic, either to garner more support, or just to let the matter fade away. If the Council does not act by next month, the proposal will die, and developers will have to wait six months to bring it back.

According to a Council statement, the petitioner filed a formal, written request for continuance in accordance with Indiana law. “The extra time benefits everyone involved – the petitioner, Council members, and residents,” it stated, “by allowing a more thorough review before such an important decision.” Drake said not all Council members were consulted before the item was pulled from the agenda and the statement was made.

Council members have confirmed that public comment will be heard before a vote is taken next month.

Motorcycle Driver Seriously Hurt in Crash

(La Porte, IN) - A man on a motorcycle was seriously injured in a collision with a car in La Porte.

Timothy Ludlow was transported by medical helicopter to an unknown hospital following the late Tuesday morning accident on Indiana 2 at Boyd Boulevard on the city’s east side.

La Porte Police said the investigation shows Ludlow was in the eastbound passing lane of the state highway when he struck a passenger vehicle operated by Tyrone Edwards.

Edwards told investigators he was crossing the eastbound lanes to turn westbound when the motorcycle, a 2013 Harley Davidson Road King, clipped his driver’s side door and rear fender.

Police said Ludlow, who laid down about 30 feet of skid marks, was discovered face down on the ground about 10 feet away from his motorcycle. He was unable to be questioned right away about the accident due to his injuries, police said.

Additional details like the age of both drivers and where they reside were not released.

Public Meeting Tomorrow About Data Centers

(La Porte County, IN) - The public is invited to a town hall type meeting about data centers Saturday outside La Porte.

La Porte County Commissioner Steve Holifield, who called for the meeting, said people can share what they would like to see in a data center ordinance that will start being worked on soon.

People can also ask questions.

“We’ll answer what we can and take information from them on what they would like to see in the ordinance,” he said.

The meeting beginning at 9 a.m. will be at the Scipio Township Volunteer Fire Department at 1105 W. 250 South.

The La Porte County Planning Commission is expected to discuss the drafting of a data center ordinance at its next meeting on November 25 at 6 p.m. at the La Porte County Complex in downtown La Porte.

The meeting is in response to concerns expressed recently during a county commissioners meeting about the potential negative impacts of a data center.

Most of the people speaking reside in the area of Indiana 39 and 400 South where they fear a data center could be looking to build due to reports of landowners being approached by realtors about selling.

Plans for Data Center in Jeopardy

(St. Joseph County, IN) - A proposed $12 billion data center outside New Carlisle is receiving major push back.  A St. Joseph County Council committee is not giving a favorable recommendation to the project.  For it to happen, the project needs over 1,000 acres of farmland to be rezoned for industrial use.

The land east of Timothy Road would house 14 data center buildings.  The rezoning request is expected to be given a final vote by the full St. Joseph County Council on Tuesday.

(Michigan City, IN) - What could be viewed as a life sentence has been given for the shootings of two men in Michigan City.  Javan Brown of Michigan City received a 115 year sentence on two counts of attempted murder and one gun related charge.

The shootings happened over two years ago in the 400 block of York St. Brown, 23, stepped out of a car, fired shots and ran back to the vehicle, police said.  More shots rang out from the vehicle as he fled the scene.  Police said one man was shot in the head but the bullet did not penetrate his skull while the other man was shot multiple times in the leg.  In 2019, Brown was given a more than five year sentence for reckless homicide in connection with the accidental fatal shooting of a friend.

OWI for Semi Driver in Crash

About two weeks ago, police say the overturned semi and trailer on Interstate 94 blocked all of the eastbound lanes.  Multiple vehicles hit the rig, including a driver who suffered a broken leg.  Police say the truck driver told investigators he drank about ten beers during a 10 hour period of time on the road before the crash.  The Alabama man could face an up to six year sentence on a charge of operating while intoxicated causing serious injury.

From Winless to Football Sectional Title Shot

(La Porte, IN) - After not winning a game last season, the La Porte High School football team will play for the sectional title Friday at home against Michigan City.  The Slicers (4-6) seem to be playing their best football of the season going into the game with the Wolves (7-3).

Our voice of the Slicers, Ben Davis said he believes the Slicers have a shot at an upset if they limit mistakes and keep the game relatively low scoring to counter what can be an explosive Wolves offense.  “I feel La Porte has more of a chance to hang around and sneak out a win late. I think they can beat Michigan City,” he said.

Ben also said it’s incredible for La Porte to have gone from a winless season to playing for the sectional title at home against a major rival.  He said it’s been fun watching the team this year get better each game.  “They’ve grown up.  They’ve gotten bigger.  They’ve gotten stronger. They’ve gotten a little bit faster. They’re more disciplined.  I’m really excited about seeing where the product is Friday night,” he said.

The kick off at Kiwanis Field is scheduled for 7 p.m.   Our live broadcast on 96.7 The Eagle is scheduled to begin at 6:45 p.m. with the pregame show.

Proposed Offender Home Still Drawing Complaints

(La Porte County, IN) - People continue to speak out against plans to create a home for La Porte County offenders in a residential neighborhood.  During Wednesday’s La Porte County Commissioners meeting, Michigan City resident Tommy Kulavic said a respite home for offenders trying to break their addictions should be in a less populated area.

He lives just a few blocks from where it’s proposed on the city’s west side across the street from the former St. Anthony Hospital  “The people in my neighborhood, they don’t want it there,” he said.  Kulavic also suggested the $750,000 pledged by the La Porte County Council last year to help fund the estimated $3.1 million project should be taken back.

The facility would hold about 20 male offenders who would live there for up to two years while receiving substance abuse treatment during their stay.  La Porte County Commission President Connie Gramarossa told Kulavic he should take his concerns to the county council since that’s the governing body that pledged the dollars.  Supporters say the proposed respite home is needed since there is no such facility right now in the county.

Council Formally Opposes Redistricting

(Michigan City, IN) - Michigan City officials have taken a stand against early redistricting.  The city council made up entirely of democrats Tuesday night adopted a resolution condemning the governor’s desire to redistrict the state five years before it normally happens.

Councilman Greg Coulter said early redistricting is being pushed by President Trump to gain an advantage for republicans in Congress in future elections.  “It’s blatantly against Indiana’s rules as well as clearly a MAGA attempt to build power in Washington D.C.,” he said.

Councilman Don Przybylinski said redistricting is meant to provide fair and equal representation for residents in both parties.  He fears the existing congressional district boundary lines will be gerrymandered to favor republicans if redrawn prematurely.  “That’s what we all want as U.S. citizens, fair representation and not to predetermine partisan outcomes,” he said.

The governor has called for a special session of the state legislature to redistrict the state before next year’s May primary.  The legislature is scheduled to meet during the first half of December to address the redistricting sought by the governor.

Contractor Accused of Being Fraudster

(La Porte, IN) - A local contractor is accused of accepting payment without finishing the job.

Tommy Tipton, 44, is charged in La Porte Circuit Court with Level 6 felony fraud.

According to court documents, La Porte County Police were contacted in late September by a Wanatah area woman claiming to be a victim.  She reported paying $6,500 in early July for Tipton to extend the plumbing in her house to a pole barn.

The woman told investigators the job was about one-third completed when Tipton stopped showing up and quit responding to her phone calls and text messages, police said.

Eventually, the woman reported Tipton to the La Porte County Plan Commission, which suspended his building license, police said.

The La Porte man could face anywhere from a six month to 30 month sentence.

Restaurant Manager Charged with Dipping into Registers

(Westville, IN) - She was a manager at a local McDonalds while stealing money from cash registers at the restaurant.

Those are the allegations faced by Abigail Jimenez, 31, who had her initial court hearing today on Level 6 felony theft.

Police said the Michigan City woman stole over $2,200 during a near two month period over the summer.

According to authorities, she wasn’t caught sooner because of her effort to cover up the sometimes daily thefts by claiming they were for customer refunds.

The thefts occurred at the McDonalds in Westville.  She could face anywhere from a six month to two and a half year sentence.

Meth/Fentanyl Seized from Motorcyclist

(Starke County, IN) - A man is in the Starke County Jail after allegedly caught with a large amount of methamphetamine and other drugs because of a license plate reading camera.

Nicholas Hagen, 38, of Knox was pulled over Monday night after his motorcycle westbound on U.S. 30 passed the camera, which revealed based on his license plate number that he had a suspended driver’s license.

Police said Hagen seemed impaired, which led to a search and discovery of more than 50 grams of methamphetamine along with over four grams of fentanyl, THC gummies and other drug related items.

Hagen revealed he smoked methamphetamine earlier in the morning, police said.

He’s charged with seven felony and misdemeanor counts related to his alleged dealing and possession of the substances.

Suspect in Dog Killings Used Arrows

(La Porte County, IN) - A man shot two pet dogs with archery arrows while hunting deer from a tree stand outside La Porte.

Those are among the latest details obtained from the allegations filed against John Lowe, 58, of La Porte.

Lowe is charged in La Porte Circuit Court with two counts of cruelty to an animal and obstruction of justice, all Level 6 felonies.

His son, Hayden Lowe, 22, is charged with obstruction of justice.

According to court documents, the father and son on October 21 were hunting on private property with the permission of the landowner in the area of 500 West and 150 North.

At one point, police said another hunter heard the dogs making noise as they were moving through the woods then start yelping and whimpering loudly. It wasn’t long before the hunter spotted Lowe and his son, who was dragging one of the deceased animals.

When questioned by investigators, police said Lowe admitted to shooting both dogs, claiming they were barking and moving toward him aggressively.

However, police disputed his story based on the testimony of the hunter and property owner who gave no indications the dogs were aggressive.

Police also said it appears Lowe was in an elevated position when he fired due to the angle at which the arrow entered the body of one of the dogs.

Police said Lowe denied his actions were out of concern the dogs might be scaring away any deer in the area.

Attached to the collar of one dog was a GPS tracking device, which appears to have been destroyed by the father and son to prevent the body of the animal from being located, police said.

Each count filed against the men carries a potential six month to 30 month sentence.

Elections Today But Not Here

(La Porte County, IN) - People are calling today asking where to vote but there is no election in La Porte County.

La Porte County Clerk Heather Stevens said the confusion must be over elections being held today in other states.

“We have no elections whatsoever this year,” she said.

Stevens said people at a pretty good rate throughout the morning were calling the La Porte County Voters Registration Office asking where they can vote.

“Their phones are ringing pretty heavily,” she said.

Stevens said the next election in La Porte County isn’t until 2026 when local and state races are settled in the May primary and November general elections.

Jiffy Pop Inventor to be Honored Locally

(La Porte, IN) - A man who once lived in La Porte and Long Beach will be honored for inventing a popular brand of popcorn still found in stores today.

Frederick Mennen shot to fame and fortune for his Jiffy Pop Popcorn that began hitting store shelves nationwide in the late 1950’s.

A year later, sales of the popcorn exceeded seven million packages, said La Porte County Historian Bruce Johnson.

A historical marker with information about Mennen will go up in downtown La Porte at Plaza 618 at Lincolnway and Monroe St. sometime in 2026.  The plaza, which features a splash pad and tables for people to eat or simply relax, is a popular gathering place.

La Porte resident Bob Seico, who’s been heavily involved in the effort, made the announcement during the city’s Board of Public Works meeting on Tuesday.

“It took me two years to get it approved but it’s finally been approved,” he said.

His application for the marker was approved by the Indiana State Historical Society, which deemed the marker in the making as historically significant. Seico said there will be a public dedication ceremony for the marker after it’s been installed.

Mennen lived in La Porte when he invented the product and later moved to Long Beach where he resided until his death in 1991.

He was 62.

Mayor Tom Dermody said Mennen is on a long list of La Porte natives who went on to make a major name for themselves in various capacities throughout the city’s history.

“We have so many people who have done great things in La Porte that you may not know or you may not hear of.  So, thank you for bringing this to light. We look forward to that marker,” he said.

Mennen came up with the product consisting of a pan-like metal container attached to a wire handle.  Inside the container are kernels of popcorn and cooking oil to be heated on a stove.  The pan is also covered by a flimsy aluminum cover that expands into a balloon shape as the kernels inside keep popping.

Jiffy Pop went on to become one of the most well-known and heavily advertised snacks for generations.

Johnson said Mennen lived in Long Beach for 29 years until his passing while his wife, Rosemary, continued residing at the home on Lakeshore Drive until her death in 2018.

Mennen had patents for other inventions like an at-home testing kit for gonorrhea, he said.

Summerlin braked and managed to avoid a collision but fell off the motorcycle onto the pavement, which resulted in life threatening injuries, police said.

(La Porte, IN) - A number of NIPSCO customers in La Porte today were temporarily without power.

The power went out after 11 o’clock this morning.

NIPSCO said over 200 customers were impacted.  The utility estimated power would be restored by around 2 p.m.  However, service was restored by about 12:30 p.m.

Reports of fallen power lines in the area of Indiana 2 and Colfax St. on the city's west side are suspected of being linked to the outage.

The faster than anticipated restoration of service came shortly after the decision was made to close the courthouse and county complex in La Porte for the remainder of the day.

La Porte County Commissioner Steve Holifield said a skeleton crew was assembled to keep both structures open for the remainder of the business day.

Upon arrival, officers spotted the 56 year old Woods throwing buckets of water into the home.

Woods told investigators the electricity to his residence had been turned off two days ago but no candles were used.  He said a fireplace in the home was used the previous evening but he insisted the fire was extinguished after he poured water on the burning wood.

Woods also said he had the chimney cleaned over the summer.

Police said Indiana 39 was closed from U.S. 20 to 800 North to allow firefighters from several departments to safely put out the blaze.

The police report indicates the dog suffered an undisclosed injury to the rib cage area.  A chocolate lab belonging to the woman missing at the time was later found dead, police said.

No light was shed on that animal’s cause of death.

Austin Kosinski, 28, of Rolling Prairie was arrested following the early Saturday morning accident at Gallop’s Marathon at U.S. 20 and Indiana 39.

Police said Kosinski told officers he began driving away from a gas pump without looking up and struck the vehicle.  He also told officers he had a few beers at a party three hours prior to the collision.
