Thomas James Miller

Thomas James Miller, 94, passed away on Monday, October 19, 2026 at Trustwell Settler’s House in La Porte, IN after a nearly year long struggle.

Thomas (also known as Tom or TJ) was born at home in La Porte to Walter F. and Madeline A. (Wildt) Miller on June 25, 1932.

He was a graduate of La Porte High School in 1950 and began working at Allis Chalmers after graduation until entering the US Army. He was a proud veteran who served in the Korean War. Upon his discharge from active duty, he drove heavy equipment, assisting on the building of the Toll Road. He was part owner of a sign shop in Michigan City as an accomplished sign painter and letterer. Many of his signs are still present today around La Porte, including the ones to the entrance of the city for the LaPorte High School baseball championships.

He then moved on to being a delivery driver for Pepsi until 1966 when he was hired to become a La Porte City Firefighter. He became a state certified Master Firefighter and later served as shift Captain, Assistant Chief and then Chief of the entire department. He retired in 1988 after 22 years of service. He then worked for the La Porte County Highway department for 7 years as a sign painter and snowplow driver. After his second retirement from public service, he worked at area golf courses for another 15 years.

On September 29,1956, Tom married Marie Dolores Konieczny at Sacred Heart Church in La Porte. Although that union ended in divorce in 1986, it produced six children – Kathleen (Tim) Neal of Alpharetta, GA; Carol Meyers of La Porte, Judith (Brian) Hogie of South Bend, and Andrew Miller, Sandra Miller and Michael Miller, all of La Porte. He also had six grandchildren – Joshua (Patti) Meyers, Colleen Neal, Brent (Elisa) Neal, Ethan Hogie, Elise Hogie and Erica Hogie and 3 great-grandchildren (Conner, Ashlynn and Adalynn). He took great pride in Joshua becoming a LaPorte firefighter and Erica’s artistic abilities.

Tom was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters (Doris Mills and Barbara Snow) and his brother Harold, in addition to his ex-wife Marie and second wife Sally.

Tom enjoyed working during Fair Week at Pioneerland in their Post Office where he painted many signs around the fairgrounds. He was a lifetime member of the American Legion Post 83 and VFW 1130. He was a lifetime fan (and shareholder) of the Green Bay Packers. He enjoyed the Arts in the Park concerts and watching youth baseball games of his great-grandson Conner. He was a charter member on the Mayor’s Veterans Committee and helped to construct the Walkway of Honor.

One of the greatest adventures of his life occurred when he was selected to participate in the Honor Flight Chicago in 2016 was able to fly to Washington DC with other Korean and Vietnam veterans and tour the monuments and sights. He enjoyed cooking, bowling and golf for much of his life but his passion was creating hundreds of wooden pins that he painted and decorated and then passed around to various people he met on a daily basis. He made them for every season – Christmas trees and Santas, Halloween, fall leaves, Easter eggs, etc. If you were fortunate, you got your name lettered on the pin he gave you!!! His absolute favorite was firecracker pins for the July 4th parade.

The family wishes to extend a special thanks to Miller’s Health and Rehabilitation (especially Morgan), the entire staff at Trustwell Settler’s House, Dunes Hospice and Drs Dixon, Edquist and Ogundipe.

Elizabeth Michelle Mullins

Elizabeth Michelle Mullins, age 35, of La Porte, Indiana, passed away on Sunday morning, October 18, 2026, at Northwest Hospital in La Porte.

Affectionately known as “Liz” to those who knew and loved her, she was born on February 25, 1991, in La Porte, Indiana, to the late Farlene Mullins. From an early age, Liz was surrounded by the unconditional love and devotion of her grandparents, Farley and Hazel Mullins, who played a special role in raising her. She grew up in La Porte, where she attended local schools and made friendships and memories that would remain part of her life's story.

Of all the roles Liz held throughout her life, none brought her greater happiness or deeper purpose than being a mother. Her five beautiful children were truly the center of her world, her greatest blessings, and the very heart of everything she did. Liz absolutely loved being a mom, and her love for her children was evident in the countless little ways she cared for them each day. She was the ultimate “girl mom,” always making sure her daughters had their hair done and looked their very best before leaving the house. Those everyday moments of brushing hair, getting everyone ready, and tending to the little details were more than just routines; they were expressions of a mother's love. Her children were her pride and joy, and nothing meant more to her than being their mom.

Liz had a fun-loving, feminine side and enjoyed the simple pleasures that brought a little extra beauty and happiness into her days. She loved doing her nails and especially enjoyed treating herself to having them professionally done. She was also an enthusiastic collector of angels and figurines from The Nightmare Before Christmas, a collection that reflected her unique personality and the things that made her smile. Christmas held an especially dear place in Liz's heart. She loved the magic, excitement, and joy of the holiday season, particularly the special memories and traditions that could be shared with her children.

Liz leaves behind her husband, Joe Brown; her five beloved children, Brooklyn Mullins, Parker Mullins, Eve Mullins, Gracelynn Brown, and Faith Brown; her grandfather, Farley Mullins; her sister, Emily Byrd; and many cousins, extended family members, and cherished friends who will forever hold her memory close.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Farlene Mullins and her grandmother, Hazel Stacy Mullins.

A Celebration of Life honoring Liz will be held on Monday, October 26, 2026, from 1:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m. at Haverstock Funeral Home and Cremation Services in La Porte, Indiana.

Burial will be private.

Although Liz's time on earth was far too short, the love she poured into her family will remain a lasting part of her legacy. She will be remembered for the devotion she had for her children, the little things that brought her happiness, and the special place she held in the hearts of those who loved her. Her greatest accomplishment was not measured by possessions or achievements, but by the five precious lives she brought into this world and loved with all her heart. While her children must now navigate life without her physical presence, they will forever carry the gift of her love, a bond that neither time nor distance can ever take away. Liz's story will continue through them, in their smiles, their memories, and the countless ways a mother's love lives on.

Larry Leon Schoof

Larry Leon Schoof, age 81, of Hamlet, Indiana, passed away Friday evening, October 16, 2026, at Northwest Hospital in La Porte, leaving behind a lifetime of cherished memories, a legacy of hard work, and a family who will forever be grateful for his unwavering love and devotion.

Larry was born on June 18, 1945, in La Porte, Indiana, to the late Lawrence William and Gladys Annette (Wilhelm) Schoof. He was a 1963 graduate of Union Township High School and proudly served his country in the United States Army Reserves.

In February of 1966, a chance encounter at the Frost Top Root Beer Stand in La Porte would forever change the course of Larry's life. It was there that he met a young carhop named Liz Colston, who quickly captured his heart. Their romance blossomed, and by April, the two were engaged. On July 30, 1966, Larry and Liz were married, beginning a beautiful love story that would span more than 60 years. Together, they built a life rooted in love, laughter, hard work, and a deep commitment to their family.

Larry spent many years working as the store manager for Loren's Pool and Supply in La Porte, where he became well-known for his knowledge, skill, and ability to solve just about any swimming pool problem. If someone was having trouble with their pool water, Larry was the man to call! His dependable nature and willingness to lend a hand made him someone others knew they could count on.

Although Larry worked professionally in the pool industry, at heart, he was always a farmer. Raised with an appreciation for the land and the rewards of an honest day's work, he carried those values with him throughout his life. He found great satisfaction in tending his garden, growing fresh vegetables, and providing food for his family. And, of course, Larry absolutely loved his tractor! Whether working the ground, caring for his animals, or simply spending time outdoors, he was happiest with his hands busy and the land beneath his feet. Hunting and fishing were also lifelong passions, not simply for recreation, but as another way to provide for those he loved.

Larry also knew how to enjoy life and the company of good friends. An accomplished bowler, he spent many years participating in leagues at both Quick's Lanes and T-Bird Lanes, where he enjoyed the friendly competition and camaraderie. He was also an avid golfer who appreciated time spent on the course. Larry and Liz loved opening their home to family, neighbors, and friends, hosting countless cookouts, gatherings, and celebrations over the years. Their home was especially lively during the summer months, when pool parties brought everyone together for afternoons filled with swimming, good food, conversation, and laughter. Those gatherings created treasured memories that will live on in the hearts of everyone who shared them.

When it was time to relax, Larry could often be found enjoying an old black-and-white Western, an episode of Walker, Texas Ranger, or just about any movie starring Chuck Norris. In his later years, he developed an interest in watching cooking shows, particularly those featuring Bobby Flay and his famous burgers. Whether it was a classic Western showdown or something delicious being prepared in the kitchen, Larry appreciated the simple pleasures of a quiet evening at home.

Larry had a particularly soft spot for animals, especially his beloved cats. He cared deeply for his farm animals, and it seemed that every stray cat in the neighborhood somehow knew the Schoof home was a safe place to find food, warmth, and kindness. Larry never had much trouble finding room for one more. His compassion for animals was yet another reflection of his generous heart and gentle nature.

Left to cherish his memory is his beloved wife of 60 years, Liz Schoof; his two daughters, Christine Loraine (Curt) Cable and Shelley Renee (Marc) Condo; seven grandchildren, Nicole Cravens, Haley Cable, Ryan Cravens, Audrey (Trevor) Klibinski, Cade Condo, Cassie Condo, and Kale Condo; and one great-grandson, Wylder Klibinski. He is also survived by his sisters-in-law, Dottie Schoof, Dee Hughes and Sheila Colston, and brother-in-law Hank Colston, along with many extended family members and dear friends.

Larry was preceded in death by his parents, Lawrence and Gladys Schoof; and his two brothers, Arnold Gene Schoof and Melvin Richard Schoof.

Funeral services for Larry will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 22, 2026, at Haverstock Funeral Home and Cremation Services in La Porte, Indiana. Visitation will be held at the funeral home from 11:00 a.m. until the time of service. Larry will be laid to rest at Tracy Lutheran Cemetery in Hamlet, Indiana.

Larry will be remembered as a man of simple pleasures, steadfast devotion, and extraordinary generosity. He found happiness in the richness of the soil, the satisfaction of a good day's work, the laughter of family gathered around the pool, and the joy of sharing what he had grown with others. He understood that a meaningful life was not about how much one accumulated, but how much one gave. From the vegetables he quietly left for friends to the stray cats he welcomed into his home, Larry's kindness was woven into the everyday moments of his life. His greatest legacy will forever be the love he planted, the family he nurtured, and the countless lives made better simply because he was part of them. Though his earthly work is finished, the seeds of love and generosity he sowed will continue to grow for generations to come.

Mark Edward Ritter

Mark Edward Ritter, 57, of Kingsbury, IN, passed away on Thursday, October 15, 2026, at Northwest Health La Porte.

He was born on February 5, 1969, in La Porte, IN, to Edward and LeoMae (Cooley) Ritter.

Mark is survived by his 4 children, Danielle (Mike) Seibt of La Porte, Marcus (Barbara) Ritter of Kingsbury, Raeann Ritter of La Porte and Joseph Ritter of Michigan City; 3 grandchildren, Paul and Julia Seibt, and Tyler Craft; 7 siblings, Julie (Leo) Henricks, Sherry (Aaron) Banic, James Ritter, Edward (Jami) Ritter, Ellen (Steve) Mizia, Dawn Ritter, and Debi Ritter; nieces, Caitlin Ritter, Kayla Ritter, Madison (Cosmo) Briatta, and Tabetha (Bryce) Bartels; nephews, Drake (Danielle) Banic, Brent Banic, Chandler (Averee) Banic, and Jacob Ritter; great-nieces, Addelynn Banic and Kaylee, Aurora, Liberty and Mia Koepke; and great-nephew, Wyatt Banic.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Mark came from a family that valued hard work, strong hands, leadership, and the satisfaction of a job well done. He began working at just 12 years old, helping a local farmer bale hay in the fields bordering his hometown of Kingsbury. That work ethic stayed with him throughout his life. He spent more than 30 years in foundry work at AeroMetals and later PreCoat Metals, and he also worked for a time at the LaPorte County Sheriff's Department jail. He finished his working years in the shipping department at American Licorice, continuing until his health made him step away in June. Mark was a proud and determined man who believed that if you could get out of bed, you could work--and he did just that for as long as he was able.

Community, tradition, and commitment were at the heart of Mark's life. He cared for his community as deeply as he cared for his own family, serving as a member of the Kingsbury Masonic Lodge and a former member of the Kingsbury Town Council. Yet the work closest to his heart was rooted in family tradition and a lifelong passion for the Kingsbury Volunteer Fire Department. From birth, the fire department was Mark's second home. His family had been involved since the department was officially established, so following in their footsteps and joining the brotherhood of firefighters came naturally to him. Long before he was old enough to join, he was already grabbing a hose and helping his father fight fires. At 16, he proudly became a Junior Firefighter and at 18 became an official Fireman that went on to serve the department for 44 years. His many qualifications included Firefighter I and II, Hazmat Operations, and Emergency Medical First Responder. He served as Assistant Chief under his father, became Chief in 1999, and remained in that role until his health no longer allowed it. One of his proudest moments was seeing his son Marcus step into his own boots as a firefighter and share the special father-son bond that Mark had treasured with his own father. Mark's leadership, knowledge, and dedication live on in the many people he taught, encouraged, and inspired to enter the firefighters' brotherhood. When someone in the community faced an emergency, they often called Mark before calling 911. His presence brought comfort and reassurance, and his compassion shone brightest when people needed it most.

Mark was larger than life and a friend to everyone he met. He could be stubborn and never hesitated to speak his mind, but he was also deeply protective, loyal, and full of fun. His big, contagious laugh and unmistakable smile will be dearly missed. Mark seemed to know when a friend needed encouragement or strength, and he had a gift for bringing a smile or laugh during difficult times. He was always happy to make a child's wish for a ride in the fire truck come true, and he even made sure neighborhood children could enjoy fire-department training days that ended in foam parties.

He was the kind of Uncle every family hopes for--fun, goofy, dependable, and always ready to have your back. He kept secrets, offered guidance when it was needed, sent inappropriate texts and memes that made everyone laugh, and lovingly tended to more than a few scrapes and bruises and a few broken bones. At holiday gatherings, everyone was always curious to see what unconventional dish Mark would bring to dinner. Easter might feature pizza rolls or mini corn dogs pulled from his freezer, while Thanksgiving or Christmas could bring his homemade chili or a crockpot of ravioli--and whatever he brought was always a hit.

Main Street in Kingsbury will not feel the same without Mark. Neighbors and strangers alike could count on seeing him on the porch, waving to everyone who passed by--often dressed in an outfit no one could have predicted. Mark never knew a stranger, and his playful spirit brought warmth and laughter to the neighborhood. He loved decorating his home with something in the front yard, from large inflatables and glowing lights to the unforgettable boat water feature. Halloween gave him another reason to dress in one of his wonderfully goofy costumes, and every holiday brought bright decorations that lit up the neighborhood and made people smile.

Mark's many interests reflected his curious and spirited nature. He enjoyed hunting, archery, fishing, trains, pirate ships, and collecting fire memorabilia. He could never resist a garage sale and was known to make a U-turn for one--which is how much of the collecting began. His funny T-shirts were another part of his personality and could always be counted on to bring a laugh.

More than anything, Mark treasured time with his family. He worked hard and gave so much of himself to his community, but nothing was more important to him than his four children and three grandchildren. As a devoted single father, he took tremendous pride in Danielle, Marcus, Raeann, and Joseph. His love for them was easy to see; whenever he spoke about his children or grandchildren, his face lit up and his smile said everything. He longed for more time with them and cherished the moments they shared.

Mark gave his children a lifetime of lessons, laughter, and stories they will carry with them. He taught them the finer points of properly toilet-papering a house and insisted that no one should ever pose for a picture without making some kind of silly gesture--a tradition his grandson Paul has already embraced at a young age. He reminded them to laugh when life gets hard, that it is perfectly fine to be the oddball and stand out, and that doing so is even better while wearing the most inappropriate T-shirt or hat. He taught them not to take life too seriously, but to take it seriously enough. Most importantly, Mark taught them that family is everything: to stand by one another, stay together through the hard times, and remember that, in the end, family is what matters most. Those lessons, and the love behind them, are a lasting part of his legacy.

Kevin Edward Warren

Kevin Edward Warren, age 61, of New Carlisle, Indiana, passed away peacefully at his home, surrounded by the love and comfort of his family, on Monday morning, October 12, 2026.

Kevin was born on August 30, 1965, in Michigan City, Indiana, to the late Walter Nathaniel Warren, Jr. and Beverly Kay (Bross) Warren. A 1983 graduate of Elston High School, Kevin went on to attend Indiana University, where he earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in English in 1987. His passion for learning and his desire to make a meaningful difference in the lives of others eventually led him to pursue a career in law. In 2006, he graduated magna cum laude from Valparaiso University School of Law, earning his Juris Doctor degree.

One of the most meaningful chapters of Kevin's life began in March of 1998, when he met Debra Emerick at Galveston's in Michigan City, where she had come to watch his band perform. What began with a shared moment surrounded by music blossomed into a beautiful love story. The couple became engaged in June of 2000 and were united in marriage on October 21, 2000, at Trinity Episcopal Church in Michigan City. Together, Kevin and Debra built a life centered on love, laughter, mutual devotion, and the family they treasured. Their marriage of nearly 26 years was a testament to the enduring bond they shared.

Following law school, Kevin served as a law clerk to United States Magistrate Judge Andrew Rodovich, an experience that helped shape his distinguished legal career. In 2008, he joined the South Bend law firm of Sopko, Nussbaum, Inabnit and Kaczmarek, where his dedication, intellect, and unwavering professionalism earned him the respect of his colleagues and clients alike. In 2016, he became a partner in the firm. Throughout his career, Kevin approached his work with thoughtfulness, integrity, and a genuine desire to help others. He understood that being an attorney was about more than practicing law; it was about listening, guiding, and making a positive difference in people's lives.

While Kevin found great fulfillment in his legal profession, music was one of the true passions of his life. From his teenage years onward, music was woven into the very fabric of who he was. A gifted vocalist, guitarist, and songwriter, Kevin possessed an extraordinary musical talent that he enthusiastically shared with others. Beginning with his high school band, "The Rodents," his musical journey continued through the years with bands including "The Merkins," "Audios Pantalones," "Hotel Bravo," and "Live Animals." Whether performing at local establishments throughout LaPorte County or simply enjoying the opportunity to play alongside fellow musicians, Kevin was truly in his element with a guitar in his hands. He was an exceptional guitarist. His guitar solos had a way of stopping people in their tracks, drawing them in to listen and appreciate the incredible talent he so naturally possessed. For Kevin, music was never simply a hobby; it was a lifelong source of joy, creativity, friendship, and personal expression. Through his music, he created memories and connections that will continue to resonate with those fortunate enough to have heard him play.

Kevin was also a talented photographer with a keen eye for capturing the beauty and wonder of the world around him. He especially loved traveling with Debra and their sons, exploring new cities, discovering remarkable landmarks, and creating lasting memories together as a family. Wherever their adventures took them, Kevin was rarely without his camera, thoughtfully capturing the architecture, scenery, and unique character of the places they visited. Photography allowed him to combine his artistic creativity with his love of exploration, preserving not only the places they had been, but also the special moments they shared along the way. His photographs became a beautiful visual record of their family's adventures, treasured reminders of the experiences, laughter, and time spent together. For Kevin, the greatest joy of traveling was not simply seeing the world but experiencing it alongside the people he loved most.

Above all else, Kevin was a devoted husband and an exceptionally proud father to his three sons, Wyatt, Marshall, and Wesley. He believed that being a father meant more than simply being present for life's milestones; it meant showing up for all the moments in between. Whether standing along the sidelines, volunteering at an event, coaching a team, or lending a helping hand wherever one was needed, Kevin was always there. He was the kind of father who gave generously of his time, not because he felt obligated, but because there was nowhere else he would rather be.

Kevin's dedication to his sons and their interests extended throughout the New Prairie community. He was a proud New Prairie Band Booster parent, spending countless hours working concession stands during football games and supporting the music programs that meant so much to his family. When his son participated in Indoor Percussion, Kevin could often be found behind the wheel of the U-Haul, making sure the equipment made it safely to its destination. He was equally devoted to his sons' involvement in athletics, serving on the board of the New Prairie Little League, volunteering with Trail Creek Little League, and coaching fall baseball leagues. During their younger years, he was actively involved in Boy Scouts, serving as a parent volunteer and board member. Kevin never hesitated to step forward when something needed to be done, and his willingness to help extended far beyond his own children. He became a source of encouragement, guidance, and support to countless other young people along the way.

Perhaps what made Kevin so remarkable was that his many accomplishments never overshadowed the simplicity of his goodness. Despite his intelligence, talents, and professional success, he remained a genuinely humble, kindhearted, and patient man. He possessed the rare ability to make others feel heard, valued, and understood. Whether someone needed sound advice, a helping hand, a listening ear, or simply a friend, Kevin was there without hesitation or expectation of anything in return. He gave freely of himself, offering his time and compassion in ways both great and small. Those who knew him often expressed a sentiment that speaks volumes about the man he was: "He made me a better person just from knowing him." There could be no more meaningful reflection of a life so generously and thoughtfully lived.

Kevin leaves behind his beloved wife of nearly 26 years, Debra L. Warren; his three cherished sons, Wyatt Warren, Marshall Warren, and Wesley Warren; his sister, Karla (Michael) Pedue; his nephews, Nathaniel (Mandy) Pedue and Austin (Joelle) Pedue; five great-nephews, Brooks, Blake, Knox, Crosby, and Nash; and one great-niece, Ava. He was preceded in death by his parents.

A Celebration of Kevin's Life will be held on Saturday, October 17, 2026, from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at Haverstock Funeral Home and Cremation Services in La Porte, Indiana. In keeping with Kevin's welcoming spirit and the many meaningful connections he made throughout his life, an open microphone will be available at 4 p.m. for family and friends who wish to share their favorite stories, memories, and reflections of Kevin. All are encouraged to come together to celebrate a life that touched so many.

Burial will be private.

Kevin's life was a beautiful composition of love, music, dedication, and kindness. He was a man of many talents, but his greatest gift was the way he made others feel and the love he so freely gave. He understood that life's greatest rewards were not found in titles or accolades, but in the relationships we nurture, the people we encourage, and the memories we create together. His legacy lives on in the family he adored, the young lives he helped shape, the friendships he cherished, and the countless people whose lives were made richer simply because he was part of them. Though his guitar has grown quiet, the music he made, the lessons he taught, and the love he shared will continue to echo in the hearts of those who knew him. Kevin's song may have come to an end, but its melody will never be forgotten.

Susan (Wingard) Hickman

Susan (Wingard) Hickman of La Porte, IN went to be with the Lord on
Friday, October 9, 2026.

Susan was born in Kokomo, IN, to Wendall and Helen Wingard in
September 1940. At the young age of 11, Susan felt the passion for
entrepreneurism and started cleaning homes for professors at Purdue
University. Many of her clients were teachers of performing arts, and she
was thrilled to be a regular guest at the University’s plays and musicals.
Susan’s parents moved their family to several Indiana towns and finally
settled down in Oklahoma. She later returned to Indiana after becoming
a widow with three young children.

On April 7, 1962, Susan married James Lee Hickman and settled in
La Porte having lived in the same home until 2025. Susan and Jim
enjoyed raising their family in a neighborhood where fellowship and
children could grow and thrive. Susan took pleasure in hosting the
families of the Circle, allowing the kids to play under watchful eye as
the adults chatted and drank coffee. Once her youngest child was of
school age, Susan utilized her fine-tuned coffee-clutch hosting skills to
obtain a cafeteria position at Whirlpool. She later transitioned to La Porte
Hospital’s Dietary Department where she performed a variety of roles.
Susan was a member of First United Methodist Church in La Porte and
participated in the church ladies’ group. She was an advocate for child
abuse prevention and was one of the founders of the church’s annual
Blue Walk to Prevent Child Abuse, which began in 2012. After her
retirement, she took up gardening and turned her yard into a beautiful
array of florals and landscaping. One year, Susan's yard was chosen to be part of a garden walk because it was so nice and had such a variety of plants and flowers.

Susan’s talents extended into the kitchen, having perfected recipes
including goulash, apple crisp, and cherry brandy- a trusted “cough

medicine” among those lucky to try it. She was a great cook and found a
way to make even the simplest recipes special. Susan was a patron of the
La Porte County Parks and Recreation Ceramics open studio time and
greatly enjoyed this craft with her daughters and friends. Susan’s
creativeness and nurturing spirit leaves an everlasting impression that
will be cherished for the years to come.

Susan is survived by her children: Mary (Tim) Ford of Knox, IN; Brenda
(Bruce) Zirzow of La Porte, IN; and Steven (Tammi) Hickman of
Franklin, IN; as well as daughter-in-law Peggy Knoll of Mustang, OK.

Susan was a grandmother of 10, a great grandmother of 16, and a great-
great-grandmother of 1, with another on the way. Her surviving siblings
include Sherman Wingard, Donald Wingard, Mary Beth Harris, John
Wingard, and Judy Thompson.

Preceding her in death were her parents Wendell and Helen; her husband

Donald Wayne Willson

Donald Wayne Willson, age 80, of La Porte, Indiana, passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by his loving family.

Don was born on June 30, 1946, in La Porte, Indiana, to the late Delbert Charles Willson and Eva Lorraine (Bush) Williamson. He was a 1964 graduate of Indiana Academy in Cicero, Indiana, and went on to attend Purdue University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree.

For more than 56 years, Don owned and operated Willson’s Green Valley Plants, building a life and career around one of his greatest passions - the outdoors. A talented landscape architect, Don had an extraordinary appreciation for trees and the natural world. He was a longtime member of the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA), and through his work, he helped shape countless landscapes throughout the area. Of all the places he could be, however, Don was happiest in the woods, surrounded by trees. He loved his tractors nearly as much, and few things brought him greater contentment than a day spent outdoors among the things he loved.

Don was a longtime member of the La Porte Seventh-day Adventist Church. He was also a member of the La Porte Lions Club and Ducks Unlimited. He valued friendship and camaraderie and especially enjoyed spending time with his friends at Kindig Hemi Auto & Towing or sharing a meal and conversation at “Archie’s” in La Porte. Don also enjoyed playing pool and proudly considered himself something of a “pool shark.”

Anyone who knew Don knew that he was truly one of a kind. He possessed a wonderfully unique and quirky personality, a quick wit, and an endless supply of sayings that his family affectionately came to know as “Don-isms” or “Willson-isms.” His approach to life could often be summed up with, “If it is to be, it’s up to me!” or “Short-term pain for long-term gain.” When there was work to be done, his philosophy was simple: “Let’s get in and get out.”

Then there was Don’s humorous observation about the world around him: “People are crazy. I feel as if there are only two sane people…and I don’t really know about you!” But perhaps the saying his family heard most often came whenever someone was heading out the door. Don would send them on their way with his own version of a loving warning: “Watch out for idiots! They are everywhere!” Those words, along with so many other “Don-isms,” will undoubtedly continue to be repeated with smiles and laughter for generations to come.

At home, Don could often be found watching Fox News or an episode of Gunsmoke. As a younger man, he had aspirations of becoming a cowboy, and a little of that cowboy spirit seemed to remain with him throughout his life. He also enjoyed his “Rummy Dummies,” and when it was time to pour one, everyone nearby knew it because Don would cheerfully announce, “It’s Howdy Doody time!” These little traditions and unmistakably Don moments made life around him more colorful, entertaining, and memorable.

Behind Don’s humor, determination, and strong personality was a man deeply connected to the people and places that made up his life. He worked hard, built a business that endured for more than half a century, treasured his friendships, and found peace among the trees. Whether he was working with plants, driving a tractor, shooting pool, visiting with friends, offering one of his famous pieces of advice, or simply enjoying the woods, Don lived life unmistakably on his own terms.

Don is survived by his children, Missy Willson-Woodham (Rodney) and Eric Willson (Lisa); eleven grandchildren, Madeline Diedrich, Benjamin Woodham, John Woodham, Josephine Woodham, Raymond Woodham, Addison Woodham, Hunter Willson, Eric Willson, Jr., Julian Willson, Colin Nichols, and Mary Jane Nichols; twin brothers, Delbert Willson (Diane) and Darryl Willson (Karen); brother-in-law, Doug Hilliard; his lifelong friend and companion, Katherine Love; and his best friend and right-hand man, Isaac Garcia.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Debbie Hilliard.

A Celebration of Don’s Life will be held at Haverstock Funeral Home and Cremation Services on Thursday, October 8, 2026, from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m.

Don will be laid to rest at Rolling Prairie Cemetery in a private family service.

Don leaves behind more than the landscapes he helped create or the business he devoted more than five decades building. He leaves behind a family who knew his unmistakable sense of humor, friends who valued his loyalty and companionship, countless stories that will be told again and again, and a lifetime of “Don-isms” that will continue to bring laughter whenever they are repeated. Perhaps the most fitting way to remember Don is to picture him where he was happiest…out in the woods, surrounded by towering trees, a tractor somewhere nearby, enjoying the beauty of the world around him and doing things exactly his way.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her three brothers, Bobby, Herman, and Billy.

Bernice was a devoted daughter, wife, mother, sister, grandmother, and great-grandmother whose love for her family was unwavering. She loved fiercely, and those fortunate enough to know her could feel that love immediately. Her family was the center of her world, and she was always their biggest cheerleader, supporter, and protector. Everything she did came from a place of love and from her desire to make sure those closest to her knew just how deeply they were cherished.

Bernice took great pride in her home and especially enjoyed planting flowers and keeping her yard looking beautiful. She loved a good cup of coffee, enjoyed shopping, and was always happy to make a stop at the Blue Chip whenever she was feeling lucky. She had a strong personality, a determined spirit, and was truly a force to be reckoned with, but behind that strength was an enormous heart devoted to her family.

Bernice wanted nothing more than the very best for those she loved. Her encouragement, strength, humor, and unmistakable presence will be deeply missed. Though her family will feel her absence every day, they take comfort in knowing that their biggest cheerleader is now watching over them from heaven until they are together again.

Joanne is survived by her devoted husband of 40 years, Dr. David Gorecki; her loving children, David (Shayla), Sarah, Caitlin (Andy), Patrick (Taylor), and Elizabeth (Andrei); her cherished grandchildren, Annie, Cecelia, Lucille, Declan, Saoirse, Jack, and Luke; and her expecting grandson, David Gorecki III. She is also survived by her sisters Margaret Grant, Kathy Taylor, and Julie Taylor (Mike Stanley), brother-in-law Hank Rose, sister-in-law Chris Taylor, and many beloved nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended family. She was preceded in death by her parents, James Nolan Taylor (CPD ret.) and Dorothy Therese (nee Vail) Taylor; siblings Mary Margaret, Kevin (CPD ret.), Debbie (CFD ret.), Janis, and Barbara (the late Bruce) Becker; and brother-in-law Ken Grant.

Joanne was a proud graduate of St. Angela School, Class of 1973, Trinity High School, Class of 1977, and Truman College of Nursing. She worked with Andy Frain Services at theaters, concerts, and sporting events and, in the 1980s, had the unique opportunity to serve as a nurse for the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field. Her true calling was nursing, and she spent more than 30 years as a dedicated ER and ICU nurse, caring for others when they needed it most.

Joanne was a woman of deep faith, an avid reader, creative spirit, passionate gardener, and golf enthusiast. She treasured her lifelong friendships, from childhood friends in Chicago to the wonderful friendships she built in La Porte and through Golf, Questers, La Porte Service League, and La Porte County Historical Society. She especially cherished creating memories with her grandchildren, often hosting family dance parties and reminding them always to be happy. One of her family’s most treasured memories is dancing together to one of her favorite songs, “Happy,” during one of her final days—a moment that perfectly captured Joanne’s joy, warmth, and spirit.

Above all, Joanne was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother and the heart of her family. She was the matriarch who made every holiday special and took immense pride in the lives and accomplishments of her children and grandchildren. She taught them the importance of loving their siblings and supporting each other. Bobette Miller

Bobette Miller, age 90, of La Porte passed away on September 30th, 2026, at Trail Creek Place in Michigan City with end-of-life care through Dunes Hospice. She was born in La Porte, Indiana on May 25, 1936, to Robert and Martha (Hough) Strieter.

On April 6, 1957, in La Porte, Indiana she married John Louis "Jack" Miller, who preceded her in death. Also preceding her in death was her favorite child, son, Christopher Jon Miller; parents, Robert and Martha Strieter; siblings, Kent, Patty, Marlene and Diane; and adopted cousin/sister Karol.

Surviving Bobette are her children, Catherine Saliwanchik and Carolyn (Brian) Garwood; grandchildren, Amber MacDonald and Hunter Saliwanchik; brother, Bob "Utch" (Darkiss) Strieter, all of La Porte; as well as "adopted" cousin/sister, Kathy (Tom) Francoletti of Florida; and several nieces and nephews.

Bobette was a unique name! To make it more unique, she was given no middle name. Her children regularly teased her, as well as her husband, that she was Bobette "nothing" Miller and yet everyone loved the name which fit her perfectly.

While she may have been called a housewife or a stay-at-home mom for most of her life... the truth is that Bobette was incredibly brave and busy. She did things outside of the box compared to most "housewives" of the day. Sure, she could cook an incredible meal, and she could make you a prom dress that outdid every prom dress at an expensive store; but she was also willing to drive you into downtown Chicago to an amusement park, to the airport, to see the Field Museum, Brookfield or Lincoln Park Zoo, or the Shedd Aquarium.

She traveled the country with her husband, Jack, before they decided to add kids to the picture. Even after that, they still traveled. Jack would leave on a business trip, and Bobette would say the kids and I are coming with. The years of roadside motels, the childhood visits to Disneyland, Knotts Berry Farm, NBC Studios, Beverly Hills, and Bobette chasing down Johnny Carson... not to ask for an autograph, but literally just to talk to him... were wonderful times. Every neighborhood kid had fond memories of Bobette and all day and into the evening games of kick the can and playing in the barn at her large yard on Monroe Street. She could almost always be found on her porch swing keeping watch on kids and the whole neighborhood unless she was mowing the yard that she loved, hunting down a blue light special at Kmart, or heading out on a long list of garage sale stops.

Even after she celebrated her 90th birthday, she was still reading about five books a week truly enjoying activities and interaction with people. Bobette had the amazing ability to connect with and retain information about things long after cell phones and computers took over the world. When she still had nothing more than a flip phone, you could still get some of the best town gossip from her. She somehow still managed it without the social app connections of today's society.

With a lifelong history of Lutheran connections and family faith, she found comfort in later years with Bethany Lutheran Church through Pastor Dennis Meyer. Bobette enjoyed his visits for communion and prayer. In recent months, she missed her siblings, parents, husband, and son terribly. Their heavenly reunion will truly be joyful! If you have a loved one she remotely knew, she is surely catching up with them now! Bobette loved her family, friends, and pets over the years. While we mourn her passing, we celebrate the joyous reunion with so many waiting in Heaven for her.

Cremation has taken place with Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Center, La Porte.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 5:00 pm on Tuesday, October 13th, 2026, at Carmel Chapel located on 50 South by Garwood Orchard.

Garwood's fall favorite refreshments will be served during the Visitation from 3:30 pm until the time of service at the chapel.

The obituary photo of Bobette taken at a surprise party is no doubt how she looked as she entered heaven seeing the faces of so many loved ones who she has missed terribly. An image of pure joy and surprise at all the beauty, love and happiness that heaven has in store.

Memorial contributions may be directed to Bethany Lutheran Church, Outreach Fund, 102 G Street, La Porte, IN 46350 or www.bethanylaporte.com.

Condolences may be shared with the family at www.cutlercares.com.
