Obituaries

Douglas Oliver Anderson

Douglas Oliver Anderson, born October 28th, 1940, in La Porte, peacefully passed away Wednesday, May 1st, 2024.  Preceding him in death is the love of his life, his high school sweetheart and wife of 55 years, Judith K. (Lowery); his beloved sister, LouAnn Steele; and his cherished parents, Mr. Oliver and Mrs. Elizabeth Anderson.

Well known for his determination and entrepreneurship, many have met him throughout his various successful endeavors; from delivering fuel oil as Anderson Oil, La Porte, to hauling grains to the elevators, reaped from the family farm before he got into short-term hauling under Anderson Trucking.  So that Mom and Dad could enjoy time together in their working-retirement years, they became owners and sole operators of Liberty Package Store, North Liberty.

Throughout his adulthood, Dad was involved in several community clubs, Lions Club of Fish Lake, Stillwell Leadership, and Moose Lodge, where he was a member and leader.  While these clubs were where Dad contributed, the Hoosier Old Wheels Club was where Dad and Mom relaxed; from classic car shows to rallies and scavenger hunts to simply sitting around a campfire talking cars, this was their fun club.

Those who knew Dad can surely recall at least one story.  Perhaps he told you about his favorite childhood memories of being out on his aunt and uncle's farm and riding his companion, Scout, out and about and winning barrel races.  Surely you've heard at least one car story--whether it's how he found one or how he raced one, or that his favorite thing to do was drive his classic cars.  He had a knack for working in a car story into any conversation and how he got his prized possession, the '67 Corvette Coupe.

Knowing Doug, you've heard him laugh about the great times he had over the years with his adored wife, Judy. He would absolutely light up when given the chance to talk about Judy's drag racing.  You could feel his love for her when he teased her about "vroom-vrooming" through the gears when she thought she was alone.

Surviving Doug are his children, Scott and Tanya, and grandson, Cody.

The tenacity and stubbornness which drove his entrepreneurship also applied to family. Agree or disagree, like it or not, at least you'd know his position, and more likely than not, you learned a lesson along the way.  It wasn't always easy being raised under the expectation of perfection, but I am grateful for the most valuable lesson a parent can teach: how to be a decent human being and still fight for what you believe in.  So, no matter how you knew Douglas Anderston, may your memory of him be exactly as he was in life--no B.S.

An opening viewing will be held from 3 - 8 p.m. on Thursday, May 9th, 2024, at Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Center.

Leslie Ellen Hahney-Swayze

Leslie Ellen Hahney-Swayze, 42 of La Porte, Indiana passed away Monday, April 29, 2024. She was born on February 5th, 1982.

Our sweet Leslie sadly passed away unexpectedly in her sleep early Monday morning. Leslie brightened our worlds more than she could ever imagine.

Leslie had a passion for drinking as much pop as she could get her hands on, specifically “dark pop.” We spent several thousand hours watching Dirty Dancing, To Wong Foo Thanks for Everything, Curly Sue, and Home Alone. She loved listening to music at full blast in the car, sitting in the sun on the back porch, and going to McDonald’s. Did I mention she loved pop? She loved Barbies, a sock in a Tupperware, Bon Jovi, Celine Dion, John Rink, Dusty Rose, Van Halen, and Taylor Swift.

Leslie had a beautiful life. She was attached to her mother’s hip. She followed her everywhere like a baby duck and goose.

She taught all of us patience and a different kind of love and understanding most people do not get the opportunity to experience. She taught us humor and that it’s okay to laugh. Leslie was one of the girls.

She is preceded in death by the love of her life Patrick Swayze and grandparents Albert Wright, Josephine Hahney, and William Hahney. Dogs, Kikko, Gizmo, and Barney.

She is survived by her love, Howie D from the Backstreet Boys; her loving mother, Beth Hahney; father Michael Hahney; grandma, Lu Lu; aunt Kimberly (Jeff) Meister; uncle Jim (Joann) Wright, uncle Bill; sisters, Patti (Keith) Pierson, Brittney (Jimmy) Drakoulis, Casey (Andy) Milam, and a brother, Michael (Gen) Hahney Jr.

She was adored by her nieces and nephews Bella, Coltt, Mickey, Remi, Maverick, and Josie.

Our worlds are a lot quieter without her and her potty mouth. She will be missed immensely. Please keep our family, especially our mother, in your thoughts. “Laughed as she came to my cradle, Know this child will be able, Laughed as she came to my mother, Know this child will not suffer, Laughed as my body, she lifted, Know this child will be gifted, With love, with patience, and with faith, She'll make her way.”

Arrangements have been entrusted to Frank L. Keszei Funeral Home, Essling Chapel in La Porte.

A sampling of her regular clients included the U.S. Bankruptcy Court, National Transportation Safety Board, Federal Chemical Safety Board, various U.S. Congressional field hearings, as well as numerous municipalities, and corporations in northwest Indiana and southwest Michigan.

In addition, Marilyn placed under oath and reported testimony by numerous noted individuals such as Donald Trump, Muhammed Ali, Congressmen, and famous performing artists.

The service she was most humbled by, and proud to often offer, was the pro bono stenography and transcription service for aging military veterans from both World Wars. Her work product will forever memorialize the sacrifice and contributions of those patriots for a multitude of family members and veteran organizations.
In her spare time, Marilyn was an accomplished photographer, jewelry designer, and artist/crafter in multiple mediums. She was an ardent line dancer throughout the 80’s and 90’s. She relished the opportunity to transform, by elaborate costume and make-up, into the Purple Good Witch every Halloween for the Washington Park Zoo’s Trick or Treat festivities. By spousal osmosis, she became an avid Purdue football and basketball fanatic, including chauffeuring Coach Gene Keady whenever he came to town. She and Atley traveled extensively, achieving notoriety as having journeyed on every Amtrak route in the country at least once.

For over 25 years Marilyn and Atley together most enjoyed being Santa and Mrs. Claus for thousands of children in northwest Indiana and southwest Michigan. Most notably, for at least ten years, always made appearances in Michigan City’s Christmas Parade followed by welcoming all believers to the downtown Santa House in the weeks preceding Christmas.

In addition to her husband and immediate family, Marilyn also leaves an unfathomable void in the hearts of special friends Becky Lempa and William Richey, as well as faithful feline companions Jonesy and Gracie.

In lieu of flowers or gifts please make any desired donations in Marilyn’s honor to either the La Porte County Small Animal Shelter, 2855 West State Road 2, La Porte, IN 46350, or the Michigan City Zoological Society, P.O. Box 315, Michigan City, IN 46360.

As time marches on carrying her further from us all, Marilyn will always beseech us:
“Do not stand at the location of my mortal remains and weep, for I am not there. I do not sleep. I am a thousand winds that blow. I am the diamond glints on snow. I am the sun shining on ripened grain. I am the gentle autumn rain.”
