(West Lafayette, IN) - The frequency and severity of farm-related injuries is on the decline.
According to the annual farm fatality summary from Purdue University, the number of documented farm related deaths in Indiana has dropped from over 40 in 1977 to 17 in 2025.
Between 1994 and 2008, nearly one-half of farm related fatalities involved a tractor but that figure last year was 29-percent likely from increased use of equipment guarding against rollovers and improvements in tractor stability, according to the report.
A disproportionate number of farm fatalities in the state continue to happen in Amish communities partly due to continued use of older equipment lacking modern safety features.
