(La Porte County, IN) - A 6,800-mile, cross-country patriotic relay will be traversing La Porte County soon.
The American Discovery 250 Relay started July 1 in California and will conclude around Thanksgiving in Delaware. On Wednesday it will pass through locally.
Either by bike or on foot, participants are carrying a copy of the Declaration of Independence inside a special baton. The event is not a sporting event, organizers say, but a celebration of American history and culture. The route follows the American Discovery Trail, first laid out in the early 1990s. It’s the first and only continuous, coast-to-coast, non-motorized recreation trail in the U.S. This particular relay is expected to pass by the homes of more than 40 million people.
On Wednesday, October 14, a 102-mile bike ride will travel east from Lansing, Illinois through Michigan City and Long Beach, south through downtown La Porte, and down to North Judson. On Thursday the relay will continue southeast through the state towards Cincinnati.
According to the American Discovery 250 website, anywhere from 5-50 people may be participating in any given portion of the relay. You can even register at the website to participate yourself.
